We fall to Wake Forest 4-3.
It came down to the 6th singles match between Fawcett and Gojo of WF and went down to the wire in a 3rd set tiebreak.
Fawcett had a 4-1 lead in the tiebreak (just one mini-break though) and he had a tough, but make-able overhead at 4-2 that could have made it 5-2, but he hit it long.
He got unlucky on the match point down as his approach shot clipped the tape and bounced up for the WF player for an easy shot that he hit directly at Fawcett, unfortunately Tom couldn't handle the heat and dumped the ball into the net, so tough loss.
However, it was a good tournament for the Cardinal to advance to the semis and fall in a tight match against the top seeds.

I would say it was a
terrific tournament for the Cardinal, beating #4 seed Georgia and losing to #1 Wake Forest in an extremely close match. Both sets that Fawcett lost were 7-5 in the tiebreakers, which is about as close as you can get to winning without actually winning. The tournament clearly establishes us as a top 5 team.
UCLA (who we beat 2 weeks ago) made the finals and will play Wake Forest tomorrow; will be interesting to see how UCLA does.

Tough loss but what a match! This team has the making of something special. Fawcett had a couple of chances. He was up a break late in the 2nd set and had a break opportunity in the 3rd. He called a couple of balls out but the umpire overturned his calls. His first serve is quite lethal if he gets it in. Genesen was also up a break in the 3rd set.
Geller struggled today. He was overpowered by his opponent but he will bounce back and will have a phenomenal season. He has been my favorite player to watch during the ITA. His style
Of play is quite entertaining and he got some swag too. To think that he is Only a freshman. It will be an exciting 4 years of tennis with him if he decides to stay all 4 years.
Michael Genender is the cheerleader of the team. He is quite loud and very energetic. My ears are still recovering. Fantastic energy and atmosphere for college tennis though UW forgot to pay their electric bill. No heater today. It was freezing inside the tennis center.
One thing that really intrigued me is that most teams are loaded with international players. OK State, just like their womens team a couple of years ago are all international players. Wake Forest, USC and Baylor has a handful. The other teams have 1-3 international players in their team and thats including Stanford. Stanford plays Texas A&M tomorrow and they have a bunch of international players.
I wish I could watch more Stanfords matches in person. â¹ï¸

Long ago, the entire Big 12 went international in their pursuit of top recruits. A&M may have left the Big 12 for football reasons, but their recruiting approach did not change.
Tennis is a very international sport...I'm starting to soften on my philosophy that American colleges should try to develop American talent. The reality is that the true international tennis talent tends to go pro immediately after the junior ranks. Americans seem to be split between partial/full college and going pro, right?
