All the seeds are holding so far after 8 games.Â
Oregon State made it through its first round game, as did Tennessee, and will take on Tennessee on Sunday. That could be a good game.
In our regional, the seeds held and Louisville will take on Marquette. Marquette looks better than an 8 seed and might give them some trouble. Might.Â

Anigwe not playing for Cal. Anybody know why?

"Not medically cleared to play." School said she had been practicing. No other explanation. As I recall she was not playing full games in the Pac 12 tourney--she had only 28 minutes in their final game. Not sure if anyone said whether something was wrong back then.

The brackets did not hold in the second batch of games.
An Anigwe-less C.al lost to lower seed Virginia, with their 6'9" Nigerian center. Thomas looked quite mortal, making me wonder if she saves her best games just for us. But the real revelation was Cal freshman Smith with 20 points and 8 assists. We will be seeing her for a while.
Minnesota knocks off Green Bay by a large margin, making me wonder if they were overrated all along. There were a few who said 29-3 Green Bay should have hosted.

#9 South Dakota State, who gave Stanford a scare last year, took #8 Villanova to overtime on some fluky plays. SDSU saved a loose ball late in the 4th with a toe out of bounds, missed by the officials. A few plays later they banked in a 3 at the buzzer, to tie the game for the first time since 0-0.
Villanova was hot in the OT period and won going away.

I got to Maples super late for the opener and was surprised to see FGCU up 48-40 on Mizzou in the 3rd.

FGCU victorious 80-70!
UConn scored 94 in A HALF... smh

I didn't see it, but I gather UConn's opponent was a run and gun team that doesn't play much D. That's cake for Uconn.

St. Francis attempted 81 shots, 57 of them were threes! UConn attempted 91 shots, and made 59 of them. Azura Stevens of UConn scored 26 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

Other than Cal, all the Pac 12 teams advanced. Things get tougher now.
UCLA got past American, and like us they get to play a second mid major since Creighton knocked off Iowa.
ASU got past Nebraska and now gets to play Texas in Austin.
Oregon State is taking on Tennessee tomorrow in Knoxville.
Oregon gets 10 seed Minnesota tomorrow.
It would be nice to see Oregon State and ASU play well; I can't see ASU scoring enough against Texas, but Oregon State may have a real chance to upset Tennessee. UCLA and Oregon (and Stanford)
ought to win their games.

Beavers up 12 with 3:30 left in Knoxville. Their zone is really exposing the Vols lack of outside shooting.
If it holds, it would end Tennessees 59 game NCAA tourney winning streak.

That is exciting for the Pac 12. Oregon State wins 66-59.Â
Meanwhile, A&M came from from 17 behind midway through the third quarter to beat DePaul by 1. Freshman Chennedy Carter had a McPhee-like second half with more than 30 points for the Aggies, including a rainbow trey from dead center with 17 seconds left to give them their final lead. Quite a player, and quite a game.Â

Wow, first home loss ever in the tourney for Tennessee. They looked like a different team than the one we faced; I came away so impressed with Nared when we played them, but this time she really didn't seem to be bringing much to the table. I hate to say it, but Warlick is no Pat. Tennessee didn't really seem to adapt and didn't press OSU much until the last couple of minutes. I continue to think a strong press defense is the way to beat OSU, because they get flustered pretty easily and tend to throw the ball away. Tough final game for Nared and Russell; for all their promise when they came to Tennessee, they never reached the final four.

Wow, that is amazing--those two go to Tennessee and never reach the final four? I had not been keeping track, but zounds. I really like Warlick as an opposing coach--she seems to have a good relationship with Tara and she keeps our series going, always speaks respectfully of us.
I remember hoping to get Nared here at Stanford. Didn't she know someone on our team? Maybe it was McCall? But the Oregonian followed Mercedes to Tennessee.

Totally agree with liking Warlick for who she is and how she has led the program, which is why I prefaced it by saying "I hate to say it." I just don't see much on court adjustments from Tennessee once the game begins.
I think it may have been Kailee Johnson (the one who started with Bird and Karl's class but left the team after her junior year). She's from Oregon and it's hard to remember now, but she was a top twenty recruit (and earlier in the recruiting cycle, a top ten), and I think she played with Nared. BobK might remember better, but I think that was the link.
Incidentally, what is it about Oregon and top women's players? I feel like the state is over represented given its size. Tennessee frosh phenom Evina Westbrook is just the latest top player out of Oregon.

Nared and Kailee long time friends pre HS. Yes they played on the same travel team.  Kailee as a Soph # 1
Kailee graduated from
Stanford in Dec.
Ill disagree about Holly. And say no more

I don't know? The obvious answer would be the weather--that it favors indoor sports? And maybe Oregon (especially the Willamette Valley) as a left-of-center region has a history of support for Title IX? Just guesses. But Oregon wbb seems to be disproportionately strong given that the Bay Area has a population twice that of the entire state of Oregon.

Tennessee might have been better served by someone from outside who could bring in new ideas. I think they still try to win the old fashioned Tennessee way, by out-athleting the opponent. Throw up shots on offense and get O-boards, press on D, etc.
