16 beats 1; Stanford 1998 women no longer suffer alone in history -

Praise be to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, a 16 seed in the men's tournament, for knocking off 1 seed Virginia. No longer is Tara's injury riddled (less Nygaard and less Folkl) 1998 squad alone in history. And UMBC joins Harvard--rather different schools to be sure--as giant-killers--or proof that on at least 1 out of 10000 days any team can beat any other.Â
And it comes on the 20th anniversary of our most ignominious loss.

If you aren't familiar with UMBC it's actually a fine school. Think of it as the honors school of the University of Maryland system.
I'm not saying it's Harvard - but it's much better than your typical directional school.

Agreed. That is right up there with the Salukis and Terriers on my list of favorite NCAA mascots (thetree is always #1 of course).

UMBCs a great public school my understanding is that they do a great job graduating students from working-class backgrounds, or people of color. I dont have the stats handy but they sound impressive.

Yup. Nice to do a lot of reading about UMBC this weekend. It's nice that this hidden gem got so much attention.
I suspect a stellar school that might get more stellar.

UMBC is also a chess powerhouse. They have won the national collegiate championship a record six times, and went to every final four from 2001 through 2015.
UMBC is cool school to root for, a moderately priced public university with real ambitions. USN&WR ranked them first among "Up and Coming Universities" in 2014 and last year ranked them #7 among "Most Innovative National Universities" (Stanford was second.)
