Not Jimmy Mora's best look - washingtonismoney - 03-29-2018

Apparently Mora was asked on NFL Network which QB he'd pick #1 and he went with...Darnold:

Quote:Not helping matters is former UCLA coach Jim Mora, who was asked Monday on NFL Network which QB he preferred with the first overall pick. “Because of fit, I would take Sam Darnold if I were the Cleveland Browns,” Mora said. “That blue-collar, gritty attitude. I think his teammates will love him.”

As this Ringer article implies, there's at least some reason to believe Mora's talking a subtweeted shot as Rosen. During the the typical pre-NFL draft froofa, Rosen has had his turn in the "stupid stories and rumors spread by anonymous NFL scouts" in which he's implied to be, I guess, too much of a Richie Rich to lead teammates blah blah blah zzzzzz. That might or might not be Mora's intention, but to me it's a bad look for a coach -- even a former one -- to not advocate zealously for his guys. That doesn't mean David Shaw should pretend (say) David Bright is the next Anthony Munoz, but I would look cross-eyed if (say) Shaw was saying Bright was a seventh-round pick at best. Hypothetically. This is a similar kind of a thing for me; even if Mora thinks Darnold is better than Rosen, they're close enough that Mora should keep that opinion to himself.

Anyway I thought this was a nice breakdown of Rosen's game. Despite or perhaps because of some of the controversy surrounding him, I've come to admire Rosen. As the article notes he was certainly willing to take a ton of punishment in order to salvage even a chance of victory for UCLA.

I am not so sure about it not being a good look. He made it very clear that it was because of "fit", and that if he were the Giants or the Jets, he would take Rosen in a heartbeat. In fact, I wonder if it wasn't just a bit of trying to keep Rosen out of the Browns grasp, which I would regard as a favor. :)

And that has made all the difference.

He's helping his former player avoid the Browns.

Ummm, I thought Darnold was from San Clemente in Orange County.  Not exactly a blue collar town.

Mora continues to say weird things about Rosen: https://deadspin.com/what-jim-mora-means-when-he-describes-josh-rosen-as-a-1824254353

I think Rosen is going to turn into Jim Bouton.  Two great years, then he'll get bored.  He'll turn against the sport for his own amusement, because it's all he knows.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, on SportsCenter just a minute ago:

Josh R.osen's college coach called him a Millennial. How much will that effect his draft status?

AYFKM?

He probably isn't.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennials

The precise definitions of the generation vary, but if a millennial is someone born between 1981 to 1996 (Pew), then Rosen escapes being a Millennial by a couple months (he was born in Feb. 1997).

Of course, the irony here is that whether he is a millennial or not, pretty much everyone in the NFL draft is roughly the same generation.

Of course, I'm sure the segment on SC was merely referring to the fact that he fit whatever stereotype people have of millennials, not whether he or anyone else met the technical definition of one.

JR will be just fine either way.

Colossal a—hole.  I’ve told this but I don’t think on this site. Y’all remember Owusu’s catch. Who could forget it.

Well One of the crew on the UCLA side had a natural reaction – said “oh my god did you see that.”  Unfortunately he was a few feet from Little Jimmy. He went nuts – not only had him thrown off the sidelines but called the NCAA. The following week we got dressed down reminded we couldn’t root for the team etc. etc. etc. I felt like saying somebody should tell the jerk that maybe if he coached a little more and worried a little less about with the crew he wouldn’t get his ass kicked every time they play Stanford. But I held my tongue.

Just a complete and total jerk. A snotty little twit.
