2-43 - lex24 - 04-01-2018

Nice start

Re: 2-43 - Phogge - 04-01-2018

No Lex, 2-160.

Murderers Row. By June half the roster will be murdered.

Re: 2-43 - qwerty49 - 04-02-2018

2018 salaries:
Jackson 3 mill
McCutcheon about 8.5 mill
Longoria about 12.5 mill (the rest is paid by TB)

So after 4 games (almost 2.5% of the season) the Giants have paid just under $300K for each of those 2 hits.

In terms of bang for the buck, Johnnie Lemaster was way ahead of these 3.

Re: 2-43 - OutsiderFan - 04-02-2018

So much for "tearing the cover off the ball in Spring" and leading MLB in all those Spring offensive stats.

Two runs in four games?

Re: 2-43 - Mick - 04-02-2018

Giants are in 27th place in hitting at a team wide .192 after four games.  They have the fewest runs scored at two, next fewest is five (Orioles), next fewest is nine (Rays).  Third most double plays with five, third most errors with three.

On the other hand, after four games playing against one of the league's favorites to win it all, they have the third best WHIP and seventh best ERA (3.18) in baseball. And that was at Dodger Stadium.

Re: 2-43 - Phogge - 04-02-2018

Longoria has been quoted as saying that he’s a slow starter. So why not find some fake injury and sit him for a month.

The Giants are scared shitless that the fans would go bye bye if they continued being the worst team in baseball so they won’t rebuild. The past offseason was the chance.

Longo batted .317 in spring training, with an .868 OPS.  Guess he's delayed his slow start to the regular season.

Re: 2-43 - gocard14 - 04-02-2018

If you told me a week ago we’d escape 2-2 I’d call that a big win with our staff as it is. Our lineup will do better. Our pitching staff may do worse, but at least so far looks hopeful.

Re: 2-43 - Phogge - 04-02-2018

The Giants had a guy named Eliot in spring training in the 80’s. He hit about .700 and became a regular.... for two weeks. Disappeared.

Longoria looks like he took a nap last Wednesday and hasn’t quite awoken.

Anybody want to take a stab on when Dugger gets the call. I say April 22.

I remember Randy Elliott.  Had two short cups of coffee with the Padres in 1972 and 1974.  Couldn't stick.  On the strength of his 1977 training camp with the Giants, he started in left field for the first few months.  Batted .240, OPS was .682.  Seven HRs in 167 ABs, so he had a little power.  Good fielder.  No speed, weak arm.  Retired for a year, then Billy Martin liked him enough to give him his final cup of coffee with the A's, batting .125.  Career .210 hitter.  Had a chronically troublesome shoulder, maybe dislocated a lot.  When his shoulder stayed in, he was pretty good.  In the second swing of the 1977 regular season, Doug Rau hit him on the shoulder and ruined him.  After baseball, he taught special ed for kids, coached high school ball, ran some hitting camps.

I think Duggar is going to have a very hard time with the bat.  He hit .270 at San Jose and .261 for Sacramento in AAA.  He's a reach, IMHO.

Agreed with you on Longoria.  Everything looks slow.  Slow bat, slow feet, slow arm.

Re: 2-43 - BobK - 04-02-2018

I’m thrilled with 2 wins in LA despite not driving in a base runner in 4 games.

Mick you said we would hit great. Correct this please 😳😀

Re: 2-43 - qwerty49 - 04-02-2018

And I predicted we would win a lot of 10-9 games. Well, I got the 9 right, but our 10 runs got lost on the way to the ballpark.

Re: 2-43 - barrister7 - 04-02-2018

After watching McCutcheon and Blanco dancing under a fly ball, my vote is for Dugger.  His bat would certainly not be any worse than what we have seen.

Re: 2-43 - Papa John - 04-02-2018

From 2015-17, McCutchen had a .223 BA in April with 10 HRs and 35 RBIs, by far his least productive regular season month.
During that same time span, Longoria had a .240 BA with 9 HRs and 27 RBIs, by far his least productive regular season month.
And Jackson had a .240 BA .287 OBP and .639 OPS during April the past three years, by far his least productive regular season month.

On the other hand, before today's game Panik was on pace for an 81-HR season, so there's that.

As PapaJohn points out, the great hitting is still to come...

Re: 2-43 - lex24 - 04-02-2018

But he scuffled something awful at the end of spring. You could see in the Baybridge series that he was not happy with where he was. The guys obviously too good to keep looking this bad. And he’s just 32- he’s no old Phogge.

Re: 2-43 - lex24 - 04-02-2018

Unfortunately he looked overmatched at the plate the last couple weeks of spring. He lost almost all of last year which hurt him at the plate. He’s obviously a terrific defender.

I think the Giants are smart to let him get as many AAA at bats as possible. They don’t have a hell of a lot down there so they truly need him to be ready when he comes up. My guess is around June 1.

Didn’t Bloblo make the roster? Might see a platoon pretty soon.
