T&F The Big Meet - BobK - 04-04-2018

This might be the last Big Meet at cal’s Historic Edwards Field.  Rumors of cutting sports and of selling the stadium for college housing abound.

In any case my predictions are:

Men :  Stanford 86, cal 77
Women: Stanford 99, cal 64

I’ll admit this is hard after so few meets to really know a lot about cal.  Thus a strong guess on the score.

Remember when Stanford had a chance to break the Trojans dual meet record? 1962, raining and meet moved to Foothill’s all weather track. Jordan had let the team go but tried to call them back. $C barely won.

I was there. First at Stanford then at Foothill JC where the meet was run

Ah that bridge playing TJer. 


Actually the whole Stanford team there except two who thought the Meet was cancelled and went to a bridge tournament in Santa Rosa.

Mackenzie Little with a school record in the Javelin 192-8. Jenna  Gray into 3th place all time at Stanford 178-10.

Stanford wins the Big Meet both Men And Women

Brandt-Sims just missing the school record with a 10.41 in the 100. He also won the 200 and anchored the 4x 100 Relay Win

It's disappointing to see the Big Meet end. I can remember the cal men's team burning the script cal on the old stadium floor in the late 1980s. I also remember that Big Meet was the first event I witnessed inside the original Stanford Stadium.

When Barbour mortgaged the future to renovate the stadium, I foresaw the damage it would do to cal's football program, but I didn't take the next step and consider that it would disproportionately hurt non-revenue sports.

It wasn’t the stadium renovation that was the issue (it was mandated by the Regents due to seismic concerns).  It was two other factors that caused the financial mess:  the accompanying training facility and the bells and whistles that were added to the stadium remodel.  The new Chancellor has agreed to take responsibility to pay for the seismic portion of the renovation in return for Edwards Stadium, which will be used for campus housing.  At least that is my understanding based on reading articles in the local newspapers....

Yes, I was primarily referring primarily to the sports facility on the west side of the stadium. Many fans and members of the press talked about them interchangeably at the time. The changes to the stadium itself were relatively modest.

Cal will have to keep womens' track so the Big Meet will continue.  And maybe the men too and always at Stanford
