OT: The one that got away -
BostonCard - 04-10-2018
Or whatever the autocorrect is... there's a good article about him in ESPN the magazine:
http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/story/_/id/23041561/josh-rosen-answers-nfl-critics-ucla-quarterback-tom-brady-ncaa-2018-draft
I gotta say, it is an amazing interview. You rarely hear stuff like this any more in the era of sanitized bland interviews. I have to say I like his candor. For instance:
Quote:What's the most jerkish thing you've done?
[Pauses] The social media post about Under Armour was pretty sh---y, and the hot tub.

it's a terrific interview, unlike any I recall. A thoughtful and insightful kid.

I like this interview. Hes gained great perspective in the last 3 years. There will doubtless be some guys in the NFL who will go headhunting for him. It will be interesting to see how well he does.

Not good enough to beat Stanford.

After four years of playing against Rosen and seeing him in action, I wonder what Shaw's takeaways are, about the personality makeup of players such as Rosen?

I think it would be pretty difficult to draw any conclusions about Rosen from the results at UCLA. There were so many issues that were outside of his control. The problems there weren't him, no matter what his pluses and minuses are/were. He played on some teams that were very limited in many ways. His talents, to whatever extent he has them, would never be enough to overcome the other issues.

Only three years.
I wonder if Rosen were being recruited today, but with the lessons he learned over the last three years, whether Shaw would extend him an offer.

I keep bringing this up, but nobody ever bites on it. It seems highly likely to me that Shaw didn't make an offer because it had been made clear to him that the Rosen one wanted to take early enrollment, and to play as a freshman. Stanford doesn't offer early enrollment, and Shaw wasn't going to play Rosen as a freshman. So, mutually, there was no fit. No point in making an offer that won't be accepted. The 40 year decision wasn't going to do the job, dream school or not. Maybe in hindsight Rosen would not insist on these two conditions, but, at the time, either or both could have DQed Stanford.

That seems to be a bit of an overstatement. I vaguely recall there being a harsher, a-holier attitude from George. JR is just arrogant. Maybe that's a difference w/o much of a distinction. Whatever. I'm betting JR has a better career than George.

Definitely a brobdingnagian missed opportunity if he truly was in the cards. Whatever personality issues there are seem very minor if present at all. He may not be a Luck or a Hogan but thats an unreasonable standard to hold prospective 18 year old QBs to, when thats a maturity level most adults never reach.

It will be interesting to see if his NFL teammates get behind him.

Dusting off my rear view mirror, I see significant parallels between the teams of 1979 and 2015, in that both teams had successful QB's in their last year and the need for a QB for the future. In '79 we had a Freshman called Elway, recruited by Bill Walsh in 78-79. and who played significant snaps in '79 and achieved superstardom in 80-82 and afterward on Sundays. Shonert stayed in the NFL for many years, but never cut it at the Sunday level. In '15 we had the well matured Keven Hogan, and two OK recruits (Burns and Chryst). All three of them (to date) have not excelled at the higher levels. As for '15 we turned down Rosen, apparently due to the suspicion of arrogance, despite his obvious talents. He could have been Hogan's Elway, showing his stuff on the practice field, easing hiimself into the no.2 guy slot, getting playing time when appropriate, and getting to (and probably playing, given the rout) in the Rose Bowl.
As it turns out, we haven't sniffed the Rose Bowl since Hogan left, and we missed on being able to watch a great QB play for us in 2016-2017. What a pity...
Aren't many of the greatest QB's arrogant? (modified to remove hyperbole).

I couldve sworn Stanford was playing in and had a good chance to win a conference championship just five months ago, even with Bryce Love on one foot and a quarterback and d linemen both needing surgery. Granted, it was for the Cotton Bowl due to cfp bowl rotation, but still, 2017 was better than any JR team and should qualify for more than a sniff.. Any year winning the Pac 12 North (and Big Game) is a pretty good year.
I kinda like the guy but I like Costello more, with more qbs in the pipeline (though obviously not enough this spring)

By his words and actions, I think Josh has made it pretty clear that he would have liked to have received an offer from Stanford. Since he probably didn't want one just so he could turn it down, I think it is unlikely that Shaw declined to give him an offer because he knew it wouldn't be accepted. For reasons we aren't privy to (but certainly have speculated about here often), I don't think Shaw thought Josh was a good fit for the program. I doubt if the reasons were merely because Stanford doesn't offer early enrollment and Josh wouldn't have played as a freshman.

Plus, there is a big difference between confident and arrogant. I would add Montana, Stabler, Staubach and many others.

I think from Josh's point of view, those are pretty great reasons not to go to Stanford. If you want to get to the NFL as a QB in 3 years, Stanford is not the place to go. Based on what he actually did, it it pretty clear that was his plan. He has said some nice things about Stanford, true, and also about his academic goals, but when push came to shove, he declared for the draft. I really believe that was his intention all along. It may have certainly rubbed some people at Stanford the wrong way when he laid it out to them that way. However, it isn't a crazy set of goals or an unreasonable plan for someone with his abilities. While you point out that Josh has indicated he would like to have received an offer, I would argue that is just being "polite" (as he sees it). How would it sound if he said "No, I didn't want to go there because I couldn't start as a freshman and that would mess up my plan to go NFL as soon as possible."?Â

Arrogance runs rampant in pro sports. That isnt an issue. Terrific interview. But he didnt win at UCLA. And I do wonder if he has teammate issues.
As for his skill set - I think hes by far the most NFL ready talent among the QBs. He throws a beautiful ball. Accurate with zip. No one can touch him as a pocket passer. He has good pocket presence. Durability is a question. He was hurt a fair amount. Course that is always a crap shoot. Look what happened to Andrew.
One thing - for him to get flak because hes from a wealthy successful family is garbage.

In recruiting, I trust Shaw completely.
Play calling sometimes, not so much.
