Terrence Alexander has signed with LSU for his final season of eligibility.

Wishing him well in his next chapter.

Geaux Tigers!

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - ColoradoTree - 04-12-2018

Hey, good for him!  He wasn't likely to be "the guy" for us this season, he gets a Stanford degree, and he also gets to be a football player for LSU, which has to feel pretty cool for a Louisiana kid.  I hope his final season goes better than Barry Sanders the Younger's season in Stillwater.  I was rooting for Barry there, and it was a similarly cool way to end a collegiate football career for a kid, but it just didn't pan out for him.

Anyone know what degree program he'll be pursuing?

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - Phogge - 04-12-2018

Probably a spec teams starter and backup DB.

It's LSU and not a word about school

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - gocard14 - 04-13-2018

Sad to see him go, we could have used the CB depth and expect he would have had good playing time this year, but wishing him the best.

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - donkey687 - 04-13-2018

Yeah, I wish him well. Terrence reminds me of Wayne Lyons. Great athlete who got early playing time and showed promise but then got passed by others on the Stanford roster. I hope his transfer season works out better than Wayne Lyons at Michigan who didn't get much playing time.

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BigEasyCard - 04-13-2018

This observer projects Terrence Alexander as a starter for LSU:

One of my great Stanford football memories is seeing New Orleanians Terrence Alexander and Jay Tyler line up next to each other to receive a kickoff late in the 2016 game at Oregon.  Their Dads played together on the same high school football team two decades earlier.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BobK - 04-13-2018

Wayne got his Masters and is doing quite well, which is the real purpose of school.  My rant

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BostonCard - 04-13-2018

Take a minute to think about the following...

A player grad transfers out of Stanford because of limited playing opportunities, and goes to not just another school, not just an SEC school, but one of the top blue chip programs in the country, where he is projected as a potential starter.  And this is not the first time, nor the second time.  Between Lyons, Chryst, and now Alexander, this is the third Stanford player transferring from Stanford to a major blue chip program (Michigan, Tennessee, and now LSU) in a search for more playing time.  Let that sink in for a minute.

Didn't we already know about this more than a month ago?

Alexander is a current Stanford track athlete.  So some of us find this interesting

Despite what I am about to write, that is an amazing thought.

However, Lyons didn't find much playing time at Michigan, and Bobk has suggested that he really went there for the Masters degree. Whether Alexander or Chryst actually get significant playing time remains to be seen (though isn't Tennessee's QB situation rather dire - I might put my money on Chryst there).

Others have gone to rather prominent programs as well, but few received much playing time. There was the already mentioned Barry Sanders at OSU for example.
I seem to remember that somebody did transfer and get quite a bit of playing time (if not stats) at a prominent program. Hmmm - maybe Charlie Hopkins??

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BostonCard - 04-13-2018

Forgot about Sanders to OSU and Hopkins to Virginia (though I wouldn't classify Virginia as in the same league as Michigan or LSU).  There was also Kevin Reihner to Penn State.

The question is not so much whether they get playing time or not at their new destination, but that the players leaving Stanford are by and large seeking more playing time elsewhere.  But, with a few exceptions (such as Nottingham), they are not going to FCS programs or even G5 programs, but to major collegiate football programs, and some of them are going to truly elite programs.  It is pretty amazing to think about.

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BobK - 04-13-2018

I didn’t mean to imply Lyons went to Michigan just to get his Masters.  However it is very common for a Stanford student to not get into the graduate program of their choice.    I have had conversations with two Stanford athletes who had another year of eligibility who didn’t get into the grad program of their choice and went elsewhere for their final year.  Both had very successful athletic years and got their masters

In the case of some athletes, football and basketball, their masters might be completely paid for by their athletic scholarship.  That’s a big deal when lacking a silver spoon.

We shouldn’t look at grad transfers as purely athletic but a combination of athletic and academic

Kevin Reihner to Penn State, Davis Dudchock to Vanderbilt, Kelsey Young to Boise State, Pat Skov to Georgia Tech, Charlie Hopkins to Virginia (ALL FROM THE RECRUITING CLASS OF 2011), Dontonio Jordan to SJSU where he racked up zero catches, Casey Tucker to ASU this year...

I seem to remember Greg Taboada visiting Georgia before deciding to just take his degree and move on?

Was genuinely surprised by Kelsey Young. He graduated with a degree in Computer Science and I was actually in a few of his classes. Pretty smart cookie. Boise State was clearly only for the football, as I think he was disgruntled by only being a jet sweep/screen guy here. (Backfired; they hardly used him.)

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - BostonCard - 04-13-2018

Brings up the question... who has been the most successful graduate transfer out of the program?

Young as you mentioned was hardly used at Boise State
Reihner was mostly a special teams guy at Penn State
Patrick Skov was used as a fullback at Ga Tech, where he started 8 games and played in 11. However, his stats were very meh and his touches went down as the season progressed.  He had 93 rushes for 377 yards in 11 games, but tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with 6, and added two more touchdown catches.
Lyons as CTCard found did not find much playing time at Michigan
Dudchock had 17 receptions for 261 yards and a touchdown at Vanderbilt
Hopkins started 11 out of 12 games for Virginia, but had 11 catches for 90 yards and two TDs

Overall, none of our graduate outbound transfers became stars.  I'd say Skov probably had the best graduate transfer career.  But even though we have only taken one graduate transfer in (Brennan Scarlett), he had a bigger impact on our 2015 than any of the guys who transferred out.

Would agree on Skov from a statistical perspective. Honorable mention would probably go to Dudchock, who I'm sure did plenty of dirty work up front in addition to his catches (Vandy uses TE's frequently).

And IMO it's not too surprising none of our outbound grad transfers "became stars" - these were mostly guys who weren't stars at Stanford, and generally didn't see the field too much for us (with a couple exceptions). So when they transfer to another P5 school it shouldn't be too much of a shock that they don't suddenly blossom in a single year, especially if the school is on a similar talent level that we are.

Will be very interesting to follow Alexander, Chryst, and Tucker this coming year.

Re: Terrence Alexander to LSU - gocard14 - 04-13-2018

No but it is reassuring and speaks well to our coaching that they didn’t go elsewhere and perform way above what they did with us. If they transferred then dominated it would call into question whether we are underutilizing their talent. For example see what happened to Foles, Keenum, and Goff after getting away from Jeff Fisher. As it stands it seems that our coaches got as much or more out of those players then other coaching staffs did.

Scarlett is a different story, where he would have been a clear starter at cal but left anyways. None of our grad transfers were projected starters to my knowledge.

True, but it seems the OP and follow-ups were concerning his footballness, and we'd noted he was transferring in February. Interestingly, some tea leaves in his Twitter posts seemed to possibly indicate that, once he was awarded a 5th year (due to injury - he played as a true freshman), he was thinking of playing at Stanford still, but that he changed his mind after either being informed of his place in the secondary pecking order or not getting into a co-term. Of course, neither of these may be true. Perhaps he just wanted to go elsewhere.

He's from New Orleans and did mention being near home as a draw. It's rarely just one thing.
