Giants update -
Mick - 04-13-2018
Giants went into last night's game against the Padres hitting an MLB-low .152 with runners in scoring position. Last night, Stratton pitched a 1-hitter with clean up help from Derek Law (who looked very impressive with two K's, no walks and no hits) and the Giants won 7-0. The only hit given up by Stratton was to Clayton Richard, a non-starting pitcher. First time that's happened in the majors since 1935. Blanco, Pence and Longoria had two hits each. Crawford had a hit and two walks.
The Giants evened their record at 6-6. Runs Scored/Runs Against at 40/41. McCutchen and Longoria still not quite untracked, and the Giants' #1 (Bumgarner), #2 (Cueto) and #3 (Samardzija) pitchers are all on the disabled list. Bochy called Stratton their #1 guy...
Ty Blach (1-1, 4.11 ERA) is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season Friday night against San Diego. RHP Tyson Ross (1-1, 5.25) is scheduled to make his third start.

Nice report, Mick. You did forget to mention Buster Posey is pounding the hide off the ball. With the plethora of young arms, this almost feels like that dread "rebuilding" that no one wanted to happen. However, this is kind of like mentioning the 49ers again,i.e., they are watchable.
A real attribute of the Cardboard. One can talk about another subject without being castigated. :D

An additional item from the game...
Not only was the Padres only hit by a non-starting pitcher, it was by a non-starting pitcher who was acting as a pinch hitter. This also happened on September 19, 1914 when the Reds Earl Yingling hit a pinch single off Jeff Pfeffer of the Brooklyn Robins (AKA: Dodgers) who tossed the one-hitter.Â
(I am not certain if the 1914 was the most recent year in which this happened before last night).

I'm not really a fan of the Giants or major league trivia, but this is a less active period for Stanford sports, with the end of the basketball season, the recruiting for 2018 wrapped up, etc. I think if we had this many OT posts heading into the fall and people started to feel like the character of the board changed from being about Stanford sports to being about the Giants that more people would speak up. But now it is easy enough not to read topics that are not relevant, and this board has always supported quixotic topics (see, for example, posts about graphene and coffee).

There are 27 sporting events on the Stanford calendar for this weekend, 12 of those at Stanford, and another 3 between San Jose and Redwood City. If someone doesn't live near Stanford, 14 of those are listed as "Live Video". (Just for comparison, I choose a relatively arbitrary weekend earlier in the year - first weekend in Nov 2017 - and there were 22 events.) Lest someone thinks that this is because of "Cardinalpalooza" this weekend, there were 24 events last weekend and 22 events on the next weekend.
Obviously, everyone is welcome to focus on what they are interested in, but I would encourage remembering it is a personal perception, not a fact, that it is "a less active period for Stanford sports."

That's fair. Given that posts on this board focus on football, women's basketball, and men's basketball, perhaps what I should have said is that it is a less active period for posting about Stanford sports. A lot of things going on, yes, but not a lot of discussion about them, at least in comparison to our peak posting periods.

Your post did make me wonder, when is the Stanford sports equinox?
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/this-is-the-greatest-sports-day-of-the-year/
Quote:Whats a sports equinox? As my former colleague Reuben Fischer-Baum wrote on a couple of occasions, its when all four major U.S. sports leagues the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB play at least one game on the same day. Historically speaking, it doesnt happen often. There have only been 17 sports equinoxes in history...
So I would like to christen the Stanford sports equinox as the day when the most Stanford sporting competitions occur. I would think it would occur in the overlap between seasons, when, for example, a fall team will be playing a playoff game and a winter team will be playing a non-conference game. But I wonder what day (or week end) that is.
