Spring sports nearing conference championship week -
Spiny_Norman - 04-16-2018
Next week is a big one for Stanford spring sports. Conference championships will be contested in 7 sports - men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, beach volleyball, women's lacrosse and women's water polo.
Amazingly, 6 of the 7 teams are ranked in the national top 20, all except for women's tennis which was 22 as of last week. I think we can expect all 7 to contend for conference championships except for beach volleyball.

What's equal about it?  How about zenith?
By the way, Stanford WWP was soundly (IMO) beaten by USC at Avery. We're tied for 3rd in MPSF with UCLA, behind USC & Cal. The team looked sluggish to me, and committed more errors than I expected (sadly, the bad passes reminded me of WBB). My hopes of Stanford winning the NC in WWP this year have dropped considerably. (I haven't watched the broadcast. Maybe it contains some clue as to any reasons contributing to the loss.) Remember, only 3 go to the NCAA tourney. If we aren't in the top 3 at MPSF, we get no Director's Cup points.

It was a desultory effort. The team played in the same lackluster manner in the 2nd and 3rd periods vs. UCLA the week prior and gave up a 5-1 lead before turning it on in the 4th quarter to win 8-5. So the capability is there if they sustain it over 4 quarters. However U.SC has shown improvement as the season has progressed. Stanford has not. They seemed to play their best when they stuffed U.SC and UCLA at the UC Irvine tournament back in February.
Here are the records of the top MPSF teams vs each other:
Stanford - 1-1 vs. C.al, 1-1 vs. U.SC, 2-0 vs. UCLA - 4-2 overall
U.SC - 1-1 vs. Stanford, 2-0 vs. C.al, 1-0 vs. UCLA - 4-1 overall
UCLA - 0-2 vs. Stanford, 0-1 vs. U.SC, 1-1 vs. C.al - 1-4 overall
C.al - 1-1 vs. Stanford, 1-1 vs. UCLA, 0-2 vs. U.SC - 2-4 overall
Stanford looks to be in a good position to advance to the NCAAs out of the MPSF, but they need a good effort in the conference tournament for momentum and confidence.
Interestingly Stanford has only won the MPSF tournament once in a season in which they went on to win a NC - 2014. For the other 5 NC seasons, they did not win the MPSF.

I don't know why they termed it the "Sports Equinox" other than the fact that it tends to happen in the fall and spring when seasons of the various sports leagues overlap.Â
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-sports-equinox-is-upon-us/
Quote:A sports equinox occurs when the four major U.S. leagues MLB, the NFL, the NBA and the NHL all play at least one game. Theres a very narrow scheduling window when this can happen: Nowadays the MLB season and the start of the NBA season overlap by just a few days or not at all, depending on the NBA tip-off date and the length of the World Series.
It is impossible for all Stanford sports to overlap (because fall sports and spring sports don't overlap). But there should be a relative equinox at the end of the fall season/start of the winter season, and at the end of the winter, start of the spring. I am still curious what day of the year has the most Stanford sporting events. I'm sure Bobk will know, because that is the day he tears his hair out trying to watch all of them.

As of today's rankings, women's tennis is up to 20 (and the point totals for teams ranked , but the more important number is the team's conference record of 8-0. If they beat Cal on Friday, they'll clinch the regular-season crown and the top seed in the Pac-12 tournament, which will happen next week in Ojai, CA. (If they lose, they might still get the top seed, but they'd need to win a makeup match with Colorado to do that.) So, they'll certainly contend, but no guarantees they beat UCLA in the final, assuming both teams make it that far. Stanford won the first go-around 4-3, but it was at home rather than in the LA area, though we were also missing last year's lone All-American, Melissa Lord, for that match, so many of the singles matchups will be different than last time.

All the attention for the women's tennis team is great but where's the love for the men's team??? :P
The men are currently ranked #4 with a 18-2 record. The top four teams (Wake Forest, UCLA, Ohio State and Stanford) are really in a class by themselves and any one could claim the title this year. All four have two losses with Stanford's losses coming to Wake Forest and UCLA. Our loss to the Bruins in LA was decisive (0-4) but we also beat them at home in February. Our loss to Wake Forest came in the ITA Indoor Championship semifinals where our #1 Tom Fawcett held a 4-1 lead in a third set tiebreaker of the deciding match but couldn't hold on. NCAA championships will be in Winston-Salem this year so Wake will have a brobdingnagian advantage but I like our chances.
We finish up the regular season this weekend with home matches against Oregon and UW. If you have a chance to check the team out, I highly recommend watching our #2 Axel Geller. Geller is a freshman and only ranked #57 as a result of some uncharacteristic losses (UCLA, ASU) but for my money he's the best player in college tennis. He arrived at Stanford as the #1 ranked junior in the world after having reached the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open in 2017. Goldstein really pulled off a coup in getting him to play for us when most observers figured he was a lock to turn pro.

Soon we will have a day with baseball, softball mens tennis, womens tennis and T&F. Â
Assuming the tennis teams host.  Cant wait.

Hey, I welcome more attention on our men's tennis team--the more, the better! I just only have so much bandwidth, so while I root for all Stanford teams once we get into the later parts of the season, I don't know the men's team like I know the women's team (largely because the men have been down for some time, while the women have been near or at the top of the sport, so those title runs got me hooked), so I don't have much knowledge to impart.Â
That said, this year's men sure look like they have the makings of a deep run in the NCAAs. I would very much welcome the return of the late '90s/early '00s when the men were dominant.

Stanford results this week (updated):
Beach Volleyball - won 1 match, lost next 2, eliminated (winner - UCLA)
M Golf - 4th (winner - U.SC)
W Golf - T3rd (winner - UCLA)
M Tennis - lost in semis (winner - UCLA)
W Tennis - champions
W Water Polo - lost in finals to U.SC in 0T
W Lacrosse - champions
4 of the 7 teams will be in the NCAA championships for sure. M and W golf have to earn their way via the regional tournaments this week for the women and next week for the men.
