Re: More WBB - BosCard - 04-20-2018

The Nike Girls EYBL tournament started today.  And one of the teams playing is the Cal Stars.  Lots of top players on this team including potential Stanford recruits Haley Jones, Cameron Brink and Brooke Demetre.  Jones is ranked #5 in her class, Brink is #4 and Demetre is so young that HoopGurlz doesn't even rank that class yet.  But who was the leading scorer on day 1?  Why, Stanford commit Hannah Jump.  In game 1 Jump scored 20 points in 11 minutes, including going 5 of 10 from the 3-point line.  In game 2 Jump scored 24 points including an amazing 6 for 7 from the 3-point line.

Thank you Bob!

From your careful tracking of these teams, it seems to me that we can expect Arizona to be considerably improved--a much less easy out.

ASU will probably get better since they lose no one.  It will improve as young players develop under CTT.

It looks like C.al might be diminished somewhat.  It doesn't look like they are getting enough to replace what they are losing in Cowling and Davidson.

Colorado doesn't look like it is upgrading its talent much but their coach will continue to improve the team based on experience and her system taking root.

Oregon State--Slocum will be a big get for them.  If their incoming 6'9" frosh Aquino can start then they will be a real force to contend with, but otherwise replacing Gulich will be a challenge.  I'm not sure if they will contend next year or the year after, but I think Rueck has now proven that they will be a threat every year regardless of comings and goings.

Oregon--of course they will be the odds-on Pac 12 favorite again, since they won everything this year and lose no starters.  But with Oregon as good as it was this year, it is scary to think what they will be with Boley and an extra Sabally.  I'm curious about Sierra Campisano who appeared in our recruitment conversations a couple years ago--she must feel she'll never play with Sabally and now Erin Boley in front of her.  Where is she going?  And the hint about another departure?  I hope these are genuinely voluntary departures and not a case of Graves clearing out second string players to free scholies for yet more recruiting.  He has always seemed like an ethical coach.

ESPN HoopGurlz has updated it's rankings with some interesting movements (mostly up) for Stanford commits and recruits.

2018
Lexie Hull - 14 (16 before)
Jenna Brown - 18 (20 before)

2019
Haley Jones - 2 (6 before)
Laeticia Amihere - 4 (2 before)
Charisma Osborne - 32 (22 before)
Francesca Belibi - 33 (28 before)
Hannah Jump - 55 (57 before)

2020
Cameron Brink - 1 (4 before)
Paige Bueckers - 5 (6 before)
Sasha Goforth - 8 (12 before)
Sydney Parrish - 11 (7 before)
Allison Campbell - 15 (19 before)
Te-Hina Paopao - NR in top 25 (9 before)
Jena Van Gytenbeek - NR in top 25

Hopefully that Cal Stars AAU team enjoyed playing together so much that Jones (#2 2019), Brink (#1 2020), Demetre (2021) and Jump (#55 2019) all made a pact to play together at Stanford. One can dream ...

RE: More WBB - 2006alum - 04-26-2018

Thanks for the update, Bos. I'm kind of surprised there wasn't more of a Jump Bump; given how well she's played lately, I would have thought she'd jump more players above her in the rankings. She really embraced a go forth and conquer mentality. Speaking of... am I hear-ing that we really are on the brink of landing Cameron Brink? If so, perish the thought of having her, Sydney Parrish, Goforth, Jump, and Amihere all on the same team. The opportunities for puns will be endless, and given that I am always jones-ing for terrible pun opportunities, you all will not doubt be tempted to go *paopao* to my reputation meter and send it plummeting.

(Also, +10 reputation points to anyone who can work Van Gytenbeek into a pun.)

RE: More WBB - bl82 - 04-26-2018

Do we know where Laeticia Amihere is in terms of her recovery from surgery?  Is she playing again?  Is her recruitment on hold until there is some sort of determination regarding how well she has healed?

RE: More WBB - BobK - 04-26-2018

Brink on the Brink a pun or explain more ?

Just a pun, although wouldn't it be fun if she were. There's no universe where I'd have more insider info than you, BobK! ;)

RE: More WBB - BobK - 04-26-2018

Darn lol lol.   We do love Brink of course

I don't care much for silly puns and the likes...what I care about is that we've Van Gytenbeek by the Yukons and Baylors too much in the last few years. We need these players to turn things around and start beating them again. ;)

RE: More WBB - mbdude - 05-09-2018

McGwire is a big loss for Oregon. A few talented players have left thinking they wouldn't get enough playing time

RE: More WBB - Spiny_Norman - 05-10-2018

Bob, are you hearing anything about Natalie Chou who is leaving Baylor?  Wasn't she looking at C.al and UCLA coming out of high school?

RE: More WBB - 2006alum - 05-10-2018

Not super surprised by either move. McGwire was already sixth woman coming off the bench and was unlikely to move up given that Oregon has a loaded set of forward/centers for the next few years, between their starting players, Gildon, Sabally's incoming younger sister, and Boley. Yeesh Oregon is going to be really, really good.

The 2016 class is a funny one - three of the top 8 recruits have now transferred (Boley, Slocum, and Chou). It's also funny in retrospect that Oregon's Sierra Campisano was rated no. 14 by ESPN and Hebard was no. 40. Hebard has to have been one of the most criminally under-rated of any women's player in a long time (Lili was also absurd insofar as she wasn't even ranked, but I don't think her ceiling was anything close to Hebard's). I wonder how much her playing in Alaska might have limited her ability to draw attention...

It'll be interesting to see where Chou lands. Weren't we in the running for her for a while? I feel like she ultimately ended up not being admissible, but I recall her having Stanford on her short list.
