I don't recall any Stanford player this angry at a Stanford coach. Not even idiotface.

Sherman had strong differences of opinion but he took it out on Harbaugh on the field as a Seahawk against the Niners. Of course, Sherman is a very intelligent guy (certainly beyond Harbaughs tolerance level).Â

Yikes. I have to wonder why he's still enrolled. Maybe they haven't validated that he actually made those threats, but if they have there's no way he should still be allowed on campus much less be a student.

A couple summers ago, I was playing pickup hoops with a former standout player from the Harbaugh days. Or rather, he was hooping and I was just getting a good workout for a middle-aged guy. Anyhow, we got to talking about Sherman and Baldwin and their dislike for Harbaugh. This particular player had respect for Harbaugh, but acknowledged that those guys hated him. They just couldnt get along - Harbaugh does that to people.Â
He also said that Harbaugh promised all their moms that he would take care of them, and then completely hammered them in their first camp. It was more brutal and demeaning than any camp that he faced at any level of football, including a few years in the NFL. After a few weeks, there had to be a sort of intervention with a school counselor, the incoming class and Harbaugh. This would have been Harbaughs first year on the Farm.Â
I know this isnt really news to anyone. We all already knew that Harbaugh was a total hard-ass. But after that conversation, I had a better and more concrete understanding of why a kid could grow to hate him.Â
I dont mean to excuse or rationalize threats of violence from the former UM player. But Coach H is just one of those stubborn kinds of people that pushes and provokes others beyond their limits, in all kinds of good and bad ways.Â

Conflict between players and coaches is almost inevitable. Coaches are there to support, motivate, and encourage players, but also to coax, cajole, and otherwise extract as much out of the player as possible. They are not necessarily there to make friends. There will always be players who believe they deserve a more prominent role on the team than the coach. Good coaches learn to manage these conflicts and keep players buying into the team concept. That's easier when the team is winning than when it is losing, and I think a number of players held their tongues during the Harbaugh era because it is hard to argue with success.
I suspect discontent with Harbaugh was not uncommon (and leaked out a bit when he left to coach the 49ers), but I think there is a brobdingnagian gap between discontent and issuing a threat. I have a feeling that is more related to having the wrong player becoming discontented at the wrong time.

It is interesting that both Baldwin and Sherman ended up tormenting JH as members of the Seahawks. I often wondered why Baldwin didn’t sign with SF as an undrafted free agent. Now I know. Thanks!
