Draft Day - BostonCard - 04-26-2018

Today is the start (first round) of the NFL draft.  A couple of our guys are possible late first round picks; this mock draft has Justin Reid in the first round to Pittsburgh:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2018-nfl-mock-draft-six-qbs-seven-trades-and-final-predictions-for-every-first-round-pick/

Phillips is projected to be a third round pick; Meeks and Schultz are projected into the fourth round.

Oh, and help may be on its way for Andrew Luck.

The Colts have one of the most valuable haul of draft picks (behind Cleveland and the Bills)

I think that whoever gets Philips in the third round is getting a steal.

RE: Draft Day - BobK - 04-26-2018

Horrible Harry will go 2nd round. ?

RE: Draft Day - BostonCard - 04-26-2018

Baker Mayfield drafted by Cleveland with the first pick; Darnold and Rosen exhale. In the meantime, the headlines wonder whether Mayfield will be a Johny Manziel redux.

Sequin Barkeley picked by the Giants with the second pick of the draft. Surprising given Eli Manning's age and the plethora of potential franchise quarterbacks in the draft. Also interesting given this: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/heres-why-drafting-saquon-barkley-could-be-a-mistake/

Darnold went to the Jets with the third pick.

I've been purposely misspelling his name since the Voldemort hype and his flash exceeded actual production.

Indianapolis picks an offensive lineman to help Luck!

Quote:His vicious blocking made him a highlights star on social media. Preserving Andrew Luck is the clear mandate here for the Colts. Feels like a 10-year starter as the safest pick in the draft. Grade: B+

By the way Voldemort refers to the award whose name shall be uttered.

Glad Indy got the best OL available to help Luck.  Too bad the Niners couldn't get him, but it looks like they got a decent guy in McGlinchey.

RE: Draft Day - BostonCard - 04-26-2018

Josh Rosen went 10th for the Arizona Cardinals.

With the 32nd pick of the draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Lamar Jackson from Louisville, thus closing the first round of the draft... with no Stanford player selected.

Someone will get a steal with Justin Reid in the second round.

I guess time will tell but Cleveland could have had both Darnold and Chubb today. I know I can trust this board to dredge this post up 4 years from now to give me a hard time.

RE: Draft Day - PVTree - 04-27-2018

I think Mayfield may be Manziel II or RG IV (?). I don't think he has the height to succeed in the NFL. Yes, Brees and Wilson are not tall either, but I think he's much different than Brees (pocket QB) and doesn't have the support (RB and defense) that Wilson enjoyed when he started in Seattle.

RE: Draft Day - OutsiderFan - 04-27-2018

I wouldn't have taken Mayfield #1 overall, but I don't think he deserves the haterade he is getting either.

First of all, height is overrated, especially when QBs are in shotgun so much, and even more especially because Mayfield finds throwing lanes on the run so frequently. He's had a 70% completions over a two-year span. That's damn impressive at any level and suggests he has the most important QB attribute - accuracy. He's also shown an ability to win games, including in tough road environments. The only reason OU didn't beat Georgia in the Rose Bowl was their coaches went full turtle mode in the 2nd half, basically taking the ball out of Mayfield's hands, afraid he would make a mistake. The guy is just a cold-blooded competitor with a white hot passion for the game.

As for defense, the Browns are going to have a pretty good one. And remember, they have three 2nd round picks, 5 of the top 64 picks in the draft, so they are going to get better at a lot of positions.

That was a sparkly pick.

Haven't they had good picks for years? They still stink.

RE: Draft Day - OutsiderFan - 04-27-2018

The Browns have had top picks for years, yes, but this year they have multiple high picks. It's really hard for NFL teams to screw up when given more chances. The data shows teams are better off having more picks, regardless of draft round, than having a few high picks, and fewer picks overall.

This is why it is so bad for Stanford football to end a signing day with only 80 players on scholarship. Statistically, at least one of the five guys - who are as talented as the avg. player in the scholarship signing class taken - who would take the five remaining slots, will turn out to be a key contributor to the team. Maybe you save one scholarship for a walk-on like Richardson or a Craig Jones annually, but ending a signing class with five open scholarships puts a program at a disadvantage to its competition.

In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Browns are getting 7.8% of the chances through 64 picks. The average NFL team is getting just over 3% of the chances to find top players over the total number of chances available through 64 selections. That's a very big deal.

RE: Draft Day - ColoradoTree - 04-27-2018

For Andrew's sake, I was pleased they took Nelson, but Luck can cover up a lot of warts on the offensive side of the ball, while the defense is awful (though with some good young talent).

That said, Nelson was the top player on many boards, and the #2 player behind Barkley on many more, so it's hard to argue with a pick when it's such a good marriage of player quality and positional need. I was just crossing my fingers for Bradley Chubb to fall to the Colts at 6, since their lack of a pass rush gives opposing QBs all the time in the world to pick apart the talent that is there in the secondary. But all is not lost. Harold Landry, the second-best edge rusher on most boards (UTSA's Davenport, who went 14th to the Saints, was usually, though not always, behind him), is still there. If you think RB is a bigger need for the Colts, Derrius Guice (who isn't far behind Barkley as an all-around back for me) is there, as are other highly regarded backs like Nick Chubb and Ronald Jones II. Great corners like Josh Jackson and Isaiah Oliver are still there. The best linebackers got picked already, but there is a ton of late-first-round talent at WR still available, but the run on QBs probably means there will be consensus 1st/2nd round WRs that slip into the 3rd, so you could get an immediate starter there.

RE: Draft Day - Stymie - 04-27-2018

Niners move up to get....????

Maybe Horrid Harry, back to play with Solly?

Or maybe not....

RE: Draft Day - BostonCard - 04-27-2018

Second round is done and all Stanford players remain on the board, which has to be a disappointment for Justin Reid.

As far as the support around Andrew is concerned, the Colts had a plethora of second round picks:
with the 4th pick of the second round (37trh overall), the Colts drafted South Carolina State OLB Darrius Leonard
5th (38th): Auburn Guard Braden Smith "The Colts are making it clear that they believe the shortest path to Andrew Luck's sustained health is to let him turn around and hand off more often. They now possess two of the draft's most effective human bulldozers in Quenton Nelson (No. 6 overall) and Braden Smith. Smith is an experienced lineman likely to stick at guard"
20th (52nd): Rutgers DE Kemoko Turay
32nd (64th): with the final pick of the second round, the Colts picked Ohio State DE Tyquan Lewis

So, that's 2 offensive guards, 2 defensive ends (though one may move to LB) and one LB.

Justin Reid goes to the Texans with the fourth selection in the third round of the NFL draft, #68 overall

That's about 40 spots behind where he was projected. I'm sure he's disappointed, but, then again, he'll have some motivation.
