T&F Pac 12 next weekend. -
BobK - 05-06-2018
I looked at the performance lists and simply gave points based on performance no other thought
For the women I did those I believe will be top 3.
The result:
USC 151
Oregon 136
Stanford 124
And the Stanford men with 99 points. The men are more spread out top 7-8 schools anyway

Stanford, UO, & CO all have strong distance race potential (e.g. 1500, 5K, & 10K) that may not be accurately reflected in the time seeds, plus these races will likely be much more tactical, so times may be slower, and latter parts of the races can finish with crazy group sprints that can then produce strong swings in points. Alas, most of USC's points will come from sprints, which are not nearly as volatile.
Also, Stanford will apparently be missing middle distance star Elise Cranny who had seemed to be rounding into form. Maybe BobK has more on that.

Cranny not running is a mystery. Just hope she is ready for Sacramento

BobK to the rescue: he spotted Cranny listed deep in the 5K entries with a "No Time" for her qualifying time. Her 15:49 time from two years ago would slot her in @ 8th place for this years seeds. Two weeks ago she ran a strong 4:14 for 1500 that will easily qualify her for the NCAA regionals in two weeks.
Last individual running event of the meet; Cardinal have
seven women listed in the heat sheets for the 5K! Track's version of the fumble-rooski play?

Yes! Watched the 10K races. Great win. Great stories for two 5th year seniors winning their first Pac-12 in their last race on their home track.

Again I'll confess to never before having watched a T&F meet until yesterday, when I had it on in the background while preparing a Mothers Day meal.
I had no idea UO and USC were so dominant. The first race I tuned in for was the women's 100 where all nine of the entrants were from UO or USC.
Conversely, and this question is asked in complete ignorance, why don't Oregon State or Utah have a men's team competing?
Angell Field (Cobb Track?) looked beautiful on TV.

Cost is the answer for not having a sport of course.
Oregon State dropped T&F years ago and recently added women’s track. Several years ago they had several football players compete in the HJ

I was fortunate enough to enjoy the Sunday finals in the company of BobK and his posse of track mavens. The campus venue was every bit as gorgeous as it appeared on TV; all you missed were the refreshing breezes that waxed and waned throughout the event. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your introduction to the sport on TV.
Stanford athletes were buoyed all weekend by large and enthusiastic crowds and had numerous exceptional performances as mentioned above. The teams are clearly on an uptick over the last couple years with the women's team as strong as it has been in some time.
Some expansion to BobK's reply Re the missing men's teams from OSU & Utah: Those two schools are in the low end of Pac12 athletic department budgets and revenues, and carry probably a third fewer sports than Stanford. Oregon State had a robust men's T& F program in the late 60s early 70s, notable for high jumper Dick Fosbury, inventor of the Fosbury Flop that transformed the fundamental style of high jumping into what is universally used today. Alas, OSU dropped track & field and cross country in 1988 due to "financial reasons". The women's team was re-instituted in 2005. Utah dropped men's T&F in 2005:

To be fair, Utah does support varsity skiing at a national championship level, and seems to feel they get more bang for their buck there.

Great fun with Uncle Chuck. It was a great meet with several best in the world performances. Yes best in the world.
Great win with a brobdingnagian kick by Stanford’s Cranny in the women’s 5K.
