17 last night. Crawford among MLB leaders in swing and miss.
Gearrin has to go when they activate DL pitchers.

So, (trivia) why is a strikeout abbreviated with a K?

Because many pitchers' wives were getting mad with jealousy upon hearing their husbands had 8 "SOs" in the game?
OR
Perhaps to differentiate it from Shut Out. I always figured the K had something to do with a "knockout", and it being the last sound in the word strike.
(Btw...SO = Significant Other)

I assume that it was a sportswriter who got tired of entering SO and who wanted to differentiate a swing and a called third. Perhaps it was a guy who invented the box score. I bet that somewhere along the line the Arch Egomaniac Dick Young claimed it.

I thought forward and backward K’s were used to differentiate swinging and called strikeouts. Can someone confirm?

K is a swing and miss strike out
Backwards k is a called third strike
S is for a sacrifice
striKe the K is for strikeout.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. K (and Mr. P). I scored LL games when I was in HS in the early 60's for 5 bucks a pop. Those were kinder gentler times, at least for me.

Confirmed. Back in the dark ages I kept a scorecard pretty religiously. A couple of interesting ones laying around somewhere in a scrapbook:
- Mike Schmidt's 4-homer game a 22-21 extra inning win over the Cubs
- Game 4 of the 1990 World Series - Reds swept the A's. Rijo vs. Stewart. Rijo gave up a run in the first and then retired 20 straight with the Nasty Boys finishing off the Bash Brothers for the final six outs after the Reds plated 2 in the top of the 8th.

What is a fouled third strike bunt strikeout?
How about a swinging foul tip into the catcher's mitt?
Also a dropped third strike, out at first?
Dropped third strike, safe at first?
I realize we all score different ways, and YMMV, but is there a general consensus on these?

All Ks if swinging

Strikeouts are ruining the game. Analytics. Doesn’t matter how you make an out. Power uber alles. Very few shorten up with two strikes. Very few can situationally hit. K. BB. HR. That’s about a third of the AB’s. Frankly I find it boring. And I love baseball.
Giants beginning to have the road trip I feared. I predicted 8-16 over their hellish stretch in May. Looks about right.
Williamson now not expected to be out of the protocol for another 7-10 days. Then a rehab assignment. Meaning he will miss at least a month. And who knows if he will get that stroke back. I feel for him. Injuries have plagued him. Then just when it looks like he has put it together he has that fluke injury.
Blanco Gorkys Jackson. Ugh. I wish they’d simply release Gorkys and put Slater in left till Mac is back. As for Pence. Done.
