Karlie released by Sparks ... now re-signed - mbdude - 05-29-2018

She was signed on some emergency contingency so now released with full roster. Should have been Wiese instead

That's too bad. She demonstrably outplayed Wiese, but since they had signed Wiese to a rookie contract out of the draft, I guess they have to stick with her anyway? I don't know how else to explain it, because Karlie was better on offense, defense, everything.

There's speculation that Karlie will be re-signed soon when WNBA salary cap rules will allow the Sparks to add a player. Lots of nice comments about her in this article too:

I think Wiese has been in only 1 game (for 6 minutes) since Karlie left. Had a DNP last also but reason given was sprained left knee

Great to hear, and fingers crossed. When both were available, Karlie got substantially more playing time than Wiese, and seems to have acquitted herself far better from a stats line standpoint. That she also got the inbounds ball for the buzzer-beating winner in their season opener at Minnesota also suggests the coach trusted her ball handling and instincts to substitute her in for that play. I'm cautiously optimistic.

In other WNBA alumnae news, Bird had a couple of starts for Indiana but didn't seem to perform very well based on the boxed score. She was then replaced with Victoria Vivians, who has been lighting things up and I suspect will remain a starter. It's a shame Bird wasn't able to rise to the occasion when she had a couple of chances to get solid starting minutes, but she did go 3/6 for 9 points in 18 minutes in their rout of Atlanta this weekend, and the Fever don't have one of the better starting 5 in the WNBA, so hopefully she can settle into a pretty reliable 6th or 7th woman off the bench for large chunks of minutes.

McCall was the leading rebounder in two Games recently

The Ogwumike sisters are doing quite well.

Nneka is averaging 17.0 ppg and 7.6 rpg on 58.6% shooting for the Sparks and though Chiney had to sit out Saturday's game, she had a 13/16 night for 30 pts on Friday against the Storm. For the season, she's putting up 15.3 ppg and 7.8 rpg on 62.9% shooting.

Karlie is back with the Sparks and playing today

Nice! Just as predicted, they signed her the first day they had the extra cap space to do so, so she'll be with the team all season. Really impressed with her hustle and determination to keep at it. Good luck to her and the Sparks.
