Chryst with a decent chance to start? - CornFed - 06-12-2018

This article tries to put a tutu on a pig in describing Chryst's overall production at Stanford.  I am skeptical that he can be even be that productive at Tennessee without a McCaffrey or Love lining up behind him.  Plus, I don't really know what their o-line will be like.  I hope he shocks me and lights it up.  We'll see.

If Chryst doesn't cut it in the $EC, it'll be another indirect jab at the Pac-12's strength.

That Oregon State game they highlight was the least deserving win I've ever seen by Stanford. Just a horrid game that we did all that we could do to lose. The fact that Chryst finally connected at the end to win the game still blows my mind considering he was throwing the ball into the dirt with wide open receivers only 30 feet away from him.

I hope that he gets to start for TN and never plays that poorly ever again.

The Pac 12 has had a lot of very good QBs these last few years. I think sometimes we overestimate the strength of the position nationally. Tennessee has been weak at QB for several years. Chryst may have a shot.

(Sigh)  One other thing the SEC fan base excels at is finding any damned thing that could possibly reinforce their feeling of superiority that hasn't been stroked in the last 10 days. Apparently one particular school's excellent football run hasn't been enough for them...but not for lack of trying to keep it going.  I'm thinking Chryst will be grist :) for the same old exercise.  Story line sneak preview: A starter in Pac-12 couldn't cut it in the SEC.  Never mind that recently Tennessee couldn't cut it, either. Chryst for Scapegoat of the Year.

I dunno, I have a feeling that if he starts and does poorly at Tennessee, or he doesn't win the job, the fact that he lost the starting job at Stanford to a redshirt freshman midway through the season will start to make its way into articles/posts/comments on the topic.  Right now, many of the profiles I've read seem to gloss over that inconvenient fact.  Those fans are still focusing on the positive; they're in the "he's shown he can be pretty good" phase of an offseason acquisition.

Not saying Chryst won't be scapegoated if he does poorly, but I think he'll be scapegoated in a way that singles him out rather than including Stanford and the Pac-12 as reasons for blame--i.e., a "the bum lost the Stanford job to a freshman, of course he stinks" way, not a "can you believe this bum started at Stanford omfg the Pac-12 is the worst" way.  They'll get to the "oh, wait, there was a reason he was available in the first place" phase eventually.  (I hope not, though! I hope he does great there.)

Sure, some Tennessee/SEC fans will find a way to make the Pac-12 and Stanford look bad in this if Chryst does poorly, but this isn't Wisconsin poaching Russell Wilson from NC State.  When you're getting a grad transfer QB, any reasonably smart fan knows there's a reason he was available in the first place, and it usually ain't about wanting to play baseball.  Even in Wilson's case, there was also the element of NC State wanting to move on from him and start Mike Glennon, at least according to Wilson.  (Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall that saga, the NC State line was about time commitment between football and baseball, but Wilson's line was that while that stuff had been discussed, the coach had told him they were moving on from him anyway.)

The other possibility may be worse; while I hope Chryst does well at Tennessee, if he does thrive there, will the narrative be about how his talents were "wasted" at Stanford and how he couldn't be developed properly?

I think the explanation that everyone will fasten on if Chryst does well will center around the idea that he was still recovering from a serious injury and that affected his play. True or not, it is a win-win for everyone involved. I am sure Chryst himself will say he got good training at Stanford, even if he is a bit bitter, because that is the politically correct line that a coach's son would use. I have no way of knowing what he really thinks on the subject, but I am pretty sure any recriminations will be in (very) private.

If that is the case, then I would hope our coaching staff would take some of that criticism to heart and adjust player development approaches accordingly.

And frankly, if Chryst is a good starter at Tennessee against talented SEC defenses, then I should hope our coaching staff would face some criticism for why it didn't happen in four years at Stanford but happened in Knoxville after a couple of months.

Now, I don't think that'll happen. I think the coaching staff made the right call with Chryst over Burns, and they made the right call to yank Chryst and start Costello (though I wish that change had happened sooner).  Even if Chryst does well, I'd wager that Costello looks even better, so I don't think there will be too much blowback.

Some players do better in different systems. It happens all the time in the NFL. So if he does start and play well – and I hope he does – it is not necessarily an indictment of the staff. It may be simply that he is more suited to the style they play at Tennessee.

Time to move on. IDGAF about the past. Nobody’s fault but Cryst is gone and IDGAF about that either. Hope he does well. Costello seems to have some grit but I could care less who the QB is if Stanford wins.

Yeah...what he said.  Of course, at times last year the argument could be made the QB should have been Harrison Phillips.

RE: Chryst with a decent chance to start? - fullmetal - 06-26-2018

There could have been a mental aspect to Chryst's issues as well.  Maybe it'll take a change of scenery and a new collection of coaches to kick him into higher gear, and maybe there was just nothing else Shaw and co. could have done to get to Chryst.

When you come from a football-centric family as Chryst does, sometimes failure and injury really take the wind out of your sails.  I hope Chryst remembers what it's like to play good football and win at Tennessee.  Would be great to see him take out a few $EC teams as he plays his last collegiate season.

From what I've been reading, Tennessee is QB-poor.  Chryst's core competition are two sophomores, since the former starter transferred.  Last year's starter had about 1/2 the ESPN QBR that Chryst had.  And of course, Chryst is a fifth year senior.  Great stopgap find for Tennessee.  Also, he's considered to be an excellent fit for OC Tyson Helton's system.  They want a run-oriented, power football team.

RE: Chryst with a decent chance to start? - terry - 06-30-2018

Chryst's career statistics at Stanford --

160 completions
289 attempts
55.4% completion pct
1,926 yards
6.7 yds/att
19 TD passes
6 interceptions
128.9 efficiency rating

Statistically, Chryst probably would have been considered the 11th best quarterback in the Pac-12 last year -- ahead of the guys at C.al and Oregon State, behind everyone else (including Costello).
