Scott Frost about social media (and recruits) - BostonCard - 06-20-2018

Quote:"Aside from GPA, when we're recruiting kids, the next thing we're going to look at is what kind of kid the person is," Frost said. "And part of that is looking through every ounce of social media we can possibly look at. So if some kid tweeted something four years ago that's bad, we're going to know about it.

"And I'll tell you this right now — if there's anything negative about women, if there's anything racial or about sexuality, if there's anything about guns or anything like that, we're just not going to recruit you, period. Piece of advice for you — what you put on social media, that's your résumé to the world. That's what you're trying to tell the world you're all about. That's how you're advertising yourself. Be smart with that stuff."

Remember when Leland infamously said "we are not Nebraska".  Interestingly enough, Nebraska is becoming us (fitting, I guess, since Frost transferred to Nebraska from Stanford).

Major props to Scott Frost.  Character counts, and I wish more coaches were as up front as he is.

So I guess they don’t recruit the farm boys who tweet about bagging two pheasants and a buck hunting with their dad.

I have a feeling that is not what he meant, and I have a feeling you know that.

If Nebraska didn't recruit farm boys, they couldn't field a team.

Given the number of recruits and the number of social media platforms out there, how much does it cost to do an audit of the social media presence for all of their recruits? I assume they wait until they're closer to making an actual offer to do the full evaluation. According to 247 sports, UN offered to 279 players last cycle. I assume there are services out there that will do this for you, so it's not just some intern doing the work.

I'm pretty sure most coaches know their jobs are as much about social media as actually coaching football.

As an aside, love Scott Frost's comments.  He's not only setting standards, he's being a leader. This is what parents want when they send their kids off to school, someone they can trust to build their boys into men with character.

Nebraska has a well-documented history of taking kids with questionable character.  Lawrence Phillips is a sterling example, but there are others.  What do you think might have been on Richie Incognito's social media accounts when he was 16 or 17 years old?

This is just good advice for everyone. I am amazed at how many job applicants don't realize that someone is going to check their Facebook timeline as part of the interview process.

In place you didn't get it "calmer than you are" is a reference to the Big Lebowski and was meant tongue in cheek.

I would have embedded the GIF but I couldn't figure out how

Should have gotten it as my son’s favorite movie. Is there anyway you could be Angstrom who is in the Lebowski fandom Hall of Fame?

Nope

RE: Scott Frost about social media (and recruits) - fullmetal - 06-26-2018

Interesting aside: the Kansas athletic department has a social media policy that forbids students from having fake/anonymous social media accounts.  Under such a policy, seven Kansas rowers were recently suspended (in April).  What's more interesting is that there were rumors that up to 20 other rowers could have been similarly suspended but weren't.  (Drama!)

I wonder if Stanford or other universities have such policies.  (I mean, I get what the policy is there for...seems pretty harsh though.)
