Stanford at the World Cup - Canalejas - 06-27-2011

Three squads in the Women's World Cup feature Stanford talent on their rosters:  The U.S. (Kelley O'Hara, Nicole Barnhart, Rachel Buehler), México (Teresa Noyola, Alina Garicamendez) and New Zealand (Ali Riley.)

New Zealand lost its opening match against Japan 1-2.
México earned a draw against England 1-1.
The U.S. starts group play tomorrow against Korea DPR.  Game starts at 9:15am pacific.

Cool. And we have Julie Foudy doing her usual great job of calling the games on ESPN.

Oddly, we don't have Christen Press on the USWNT. Odd, because players who win the Hermann Trophy--the soccer Voldemort--generally make it onto the U.S. team ASAP. Some have argued that's due to inexperience on her part, but they seem very eager to integrate Bares player Alex Morgan.

Netflix is a very interesting option, actually. They're desperate to secure content--they've paid tons of money for Mad Men and for an original series--because they quite rightly suspect the networks would prefer to Napsterize them as opposed to embracing the future (or at least, making an accommodation to it).

Re: Stanford at the World Cup - Griffins78 - 06-28-2011

Found this NY Times article talking about Press not being included in the National Team. (Link to article) It says she is only 20 but Wikipedia says she is 22. Alex Morgan will be 22 in a few days and was selected first in the draft. Christen was selected fourth and hasn't played with the National Team in the past and Alex Morgan has and I could see not wanting to include a player just before the World Cup that hasn't played yet with the team.

Re: Stanford at the World Cup - Leftcoast - 06-28-2011

This week's SI has a pictorial profile of the women's team along with an article focusing on the relationship between Morgan (cast in the role of the young phenom) and Wamback (grizzled veteran).    Per SI, Morgan is the youngest member of the team at 21 and has 19 caps

For now she's coming off the bench.  "Sundhage (US Coach) prefers the more experienced Amy Rodrigues, 24, next to Wambach, arguing that Rodrigues has a better understanding of the games' subtleties."  She sends Morgan in as a sub with a simpler, single-minded purpose of attacking the goal.

Great picture of a tanned, relaxed Morgan in the pictorial wearing a smile that would put Magic Johnson to shame - and raising the hopes of marketing types that whether or not the USNT has found their next Mia Hamm THEY may have.

We'll have to root for Christen in the NEXT world cup.

Re: Stanford at the World Cup - Canalejas - 06-28-2011

The U.S. started its campaign with a 2-0 win over North Korea.  Rachel Buehler scored one of the two goals.

With a giant sample size of three matches I've seen a pretty solid pattern emerge:  1 Stanford player on the squad gets you a loss (NZ), two gets you a draw (México) and three gets you a victory (U.S.)

Clearly every national team should load up on Cardinal players.
