His office brings up Rule 16.1.4 of the NCAA bylaws often to student-athletes. It lays out that the sale or exchange of jerseys or awards could hinder an athlete’s eligibility.
The department does not condone the sale of gear after graduation, Vaughn said. But as soon as student-athletes walk across the graduation stage, it’s out of NU’s hands.
“Once they are no longer here and exhausted eligibility, there’s not really anything we can do about it,” Vaughn said.
The story goes a bit into the economics of selling jerseys (at least Nebraska jerseys). Well worth a read.

If indentured servitude constitutes receiving the equivalent of up to $60k a year in education and living expenses, skills and education training, the opportunity to gain national media attention, and the possibility of working your way up to making millions in the NFL, then there are a lot of Americans who should give up their food stamps, welfare benefits, and medicaid and sign up for indentured servitude! Seems like an enviable state of subjugation!

The trade off is at the very least equal. Phillips paid his debt by entertaining the Stanford masses. He put his body and brain on the line, suffered a painful season ending knee injury and was a fantastic example and role model in his role of “student athlete.” To deny him post graduation is silly.
