This is an actual take that an actual human being thought up and said, "I should write this down."

If it's any consolation, Twitter is absolutely roasting the article.

I was really amazed as well. The writer seemed at times to not know which side he was on. Was it good to value school over a vacuous publicity opportunity, or not? In the end, he came down on the side of the publicity opportunity. What makes this so absurd is that the players are all told, as if they already didn't know it, to stay away from controversy or anything substantive about their team. I suspect Bryce Love could have made the trip if he really, really wanted to. I also suspect that, having done it once, he regarded it as a mindless exercise that he didn't need to or desire to participate in. Been There, Done That, Didn't Like It. He will have to answer enough "stupid" questions during the year. Why miss a class for an early start on it?

Samuel, one of those links led me to this article about Bryce's friendship with former NC State running back (and Colts draft pick) Nyheim Hines, and it's a great read:

Quote:Let's just say Stanford forfeited a bit of a leverage to protest if Love doesn't win the Voldemort. Five different times Cardinal players have finished second in Voldemort voting since 2009.
But at Stanford, they don't necessarily chase trophies. That's fine. too.
It's just that we thought we knew ya, Bryce. We wish we knew more.
At least now you know that Bryce has his priorities straight. I think that what Love did will help him win more Voldemort votes, not less.

When I first saw this I thought it was just clickbait from some fan blog. But Dodd is a pretty credible guy. I don't really take exception to anything he said other than the "dangerous precedent" take. That's way hyperbolic. First of all, it's not dangerous in any sense of the word. Second, most kids love the spotlight and would never turn down being in it, so the idea of this being a slippery slope, well, seems slippery itself. It's kind of refreshing to see someone say he doesn't need the attention and prioritize something else like school and getting his degree instead.
That said, it did feel Dodd was being sincere in his disappointment. He has a passion for college football and wants to see the best players promoting the game. I can see from where he is coming, but the fact is Love, like all of them, is not a professional. He and they aren't getting paid to show up, and they have zero contractual obligation to be at media day.
Besides, Love will probably get more publicity as a result of this Dodd column than he would have had he shown up.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the Pac-12. They should have been proactive and worked out a way to get Love there a long time ago. My suspicion is they assumed he would go, then when they found out he had a conflict, scrambled trying to convince Bryce to change his mind. If it was THAT important for the conference they would have made certain he would be there, by planning well in advance.

I do not discount the possibility that this was somewhat premeditated by Love and/or Stanford. Love had already done it once. He probably wasn't looking forward to doing it again. What he did got a lot of ink. That is a win/win.

We’d all be better off if Paul Feinbaum did combust on the set. Herbie could then run it in slow motion and Bryce could explain the nuances of the chemical reaction in great detail.

Not surprisingly, there was a LOT of conversation about Love's absence among the writers who were there. I think it's okay for Dodd to be disappointed, but everything else in his article is ridiculous. I was certainly disappointed, as it would've been great to talk to him, if only to compare where he was a year ago, when all he did was answer questions about replacing Christian McCaffrey.
But here's what I know. I messaged Alan George, the SID, about a month ago to ask which players would be there. His response then was "It looks like Love and Holder." When I applied for my credential for the event about two weeks ago, I'm almost certain I saw Love's name on the list of players attending, and at least one other writer yesterday seemed to remember the same thing. So I don't think this was something that was premeditated. As people -- and by this I mean Stanford beat writers and those close to the program -- were trying to figure out what had happened, we actually spoke to someone from Stanford who confirmed some of the rumors. Love had already used his one excused absence for the summer, so he wasn't able to miss class.
I have no reason to believe that this isn't completely genuine. The players always enjoy this event. Obviously, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Alijah Holder had time to eat their lunches, check their phones, have conversations with other players, and joke with a couple of writers, but that wouldn't have been true for Love. Even so, I'm sure he'd have come if he had been able to. As a pseudo-writer, I was disappointed not to get the chance to talk to him, but as an alum, I'm incredibly proud that he continues to prioritize academics. (And the silver lining was that I got to talk to J.J., which was lots of fun.)

Yeah I was disappointed by this piece also. My take was that it’s reflective of a broader trend — that society is increasingly celebrity-obsessed and entitled to personal access to celebrities, and in sports, the star athletes — and especially the Hman frontrunners — are celebrities.
It’s like an entertainment writer feeling upset that he didn’t get an interview with a glamorous actress at the Oscars so he spews venom and says she shouldn’t be surprised if she’s snubbed for an Oscar because she didn’t pose for a selfie with him and others.
Apparently, it sounds like many journalists felt snubbed because a student athlete was actually studying, and this guy was just dumb enough to write how he felt.
Imcidentally, my son and I got Bryce’s autograph after the scrimmage and he was incredibly nice and down-to-earth. My impression is that he gives of himself so fully — to his teammates, to the university, to his fans, to the kids he serves as a role model for — that he just has to prioritize his very limited time and superhuman energy.

Looking back, I think he did this just for the clicks. It worked.
His self-promoting tweet of the article is now up to 161 (!) comments, all of which are trashing him.

I've changed my mind...
How the hell can Dodd complain about Love not being there in person when he was presented BIGGER THAN LIFE on the projection screen over Skype?!?!?!!?

Same experience here. Love was very generous with his time and highly engaged with my kids after last year's scrimmage, and he's been the same every year. I wonder - is Dodd's
mea culpa article and/or tweet coming soon? If not, I hope he continues to be trolled and mocked repeatedly, perhaps every time Love scores this season... and again on his graduation day.
I'm also interested in Dodd's statement that Love's absence could hurt his Voldemort campaign. I guess it's more important to cut class and attend media days in the offseason than to avoid public intoxication and resisting arrest?

I'm convinced that Dodd's nonsense has helped Love's campaign. He probably already earned some points with the voters just for coming back for his senior year, something that will be played up all season, but now there's this. The sleepy East Coast voters will miss many of his games, but they'll always remember that he made the right choice this week. If this column hadn't been written, no would one would ever remember, not even a week from now, that he didn't go to media day. In fact, 99% of the football fans in America would never have known. By being a jackass, Dodd has actually helped Love's campaign. He's a student first, and now he's actually a martyr for the lost cause of athletes prioritizing academics.

Good points. You know the old saying "As long as they spell my name right". Love has probably got more publicity for not attending than he would have for attending. I agree that his prioritizing academics will be seen by more people as a positive than it will as a negative.
