Josh Garnett and the 49ers - Leftcoast - 08-02-2018

Any 49er observers here able to comment on Josh Garnett's chances of making the team this year?

A local writer commented that his roster spot was "hanging by a thread" on KNBR and the Mercury write-up below quotes HC Shanahan being openly critical of his absence from practice.  Garnett has been a practice observer this past week after banging his injured knee in an early practice and also missed most of last season with a similar knee injury.  Sounds like the team's patience is fading for our ex-star - tough world in the NFL.

He will make the team and start in time.  At least it says so here

RE: Josh Garnett and the 49ers - Phogge - 08-02-2018

From the inside he’s been a disappointment in pass protection. The Shanahan comment I believe is aimed at lighting a fire under him. Really unusual statement so early in camp where everything is almost always universally positive. Niners love Tomlinson, Staley and the new center. RT and the other guard spot big questions going into the preseason.

Garnett needs to be healthy.  I nteres  he got big praise in June

RE: Josh Garnett and the 49ers - OutsiderFan - 08-03-2018

It does seem Garnett has had a very tough go in the NFL so. The knee injury last year really set him back.

The only thing keeping him there, IMO, is John Lynch and the Stanford connection. Garnett is one of just a handful of players left over from Trent Baalke's personnel acquisitions, so he's really on thin ice.

If Shanahan is calling Garnett out, he must have seen a medical report and believe in the NFL you are expected to play through whatever nagging thing it is that Garnett has.

It's never a good idea for pro athletes under contract to sit out unless the medical staff advises them to do so. See Leonard, Kawhi.

RE: Josh Garnett and the 49ers - Phogge - 08-03-2018

Generally speaking if a first round pick is not starting by Year 3 then he is gone. Garnett needs to get on the field and prove himself. Quickly.

RE: Josh Garnett and the 49ers - OutsiderFan - 08-05-2018

Garnett is reportedly seeking a second opinion on his knee. That seems to suggest he believes he isn't healthy while the team doctors say he is.  If he doesn't get on the field in the current training camp to compete, he will likely be cut.  Nobody else is going to sign a player with Garnett's NFL resume, so his football career is on life support.

Too bad, it seemed he had transformed his body and worked really hard to make a run at not only getting healthy but earning a starting spot at RG for the Niners this season. Instead, he may be getting an earlier start on that post-football medical career than he planned.

Some hint now that he could go on IR again or perhaps be offered an injury settlement but that would be a bit drastic.

Niners picked up another guard for camp snaps. Rest of OL looking good.

Supposedly he is walking with a noticeable limp.  I would sure want another opinion.  About a year ago, Charles Haley was observing practice and he didn't like Garnett's technique -- at all.  When Buckner drove Garnett back into the QB during last year's training camp, Haley offered extensive opinion to one of the Niners' personnel about Garnett's technique.

Josh Garnett is back practicing with the Niners and he got some reps with the first team in practice the last couple days. He is expected to play tonight (Texans), so those of you watching the Niners can report back here on how he appears to do and how many reps he gets with the first and second units.

good news!  We'll all be interested in any comments from last night.

Person played the first series.  Garnett played the rest of the half and had a pancake block.  He played the third most snaps on offense.  I don't know about his grades, but the 49er passing attack was extremely strong, and the running attack was extremely weak, though their first and second string RBs sat.  Person is still the #1, and the #3, Magnuson, was hurt -- and it appears to be significant.

Appreciate the update!  I'll take the amount of playing time as good news in terms of recovery from injury.  Now to truly compete!

As a Niner fan and Stanford fan I am truly rooting for Josh to achieve consistent health and prove he can win the RG job.  His first pre-season action was far from perfect, but there were many bright moments, especially with his run blocking.

Here is a video breakdown of Garnett's action from Miami49erFan via Niner Nation.  Good stuff.

I'm no expert on OL play, but here is one thing that I think can't be denied.  Garnett lost a lot of weight and really transformed his body to be more like David DeCastro-like. The transformed body requires much more technique. Garnett is effectively learning how to play Guard a different way than he has before.

He needs reps to work through getting particularly the pass protection techniques right, so it's second nature. Garnett more than likely resorts to what he used to do that doesn't work any more with his leaner body type more than is ideal.  Whether he can effectively nail down the required technique and be successful remains to be seen, but it does seem the reps - and why Shannahan is concerned about missed practices - are really important for him before the final conclusion can be drawn on Garnett's long-term NFL value.

Congratulations to Josh Garnett!  He overcame his injury, and ultimately proved himself to the Niners coaches enough to be named the starting RG for the San Francisco 49ers! He will play next to rookie Mike McGlinchey.  So Stanford and Notre Dame playing side by side.

Such a bummer about McKinnon's ACL, but effective RBs in the NFL are usually one of the easier positions to fill.  Though in Shanahan's offense, they need to be good receivers, which is less easy to find.

I've been looking around for news on this, and I can't find confirmation that Garnett beat out Person to start. What's your source? The official depth chart on the team website shows Person over Garnett at RG. To be clear, though, I want you to be right!

I made my post when Garnett was being shown #1 on the team's official depth chart.  Person was the #2 LG when I looked.  Didn't realize it would be changing!
