Honestly, I can see us being the most likable team. We have a classy fanbase. We're made up of high character guys. Only thing people have against us is the band and that's not a big deal.

I really don't get why people call Shaw smug. He literally has no emotions. They're probably the same crowd that feel insecure because Stanford is the best university.

Well, some people might get turned off by some of the fan base's "holier than thou" elitist attitude. . .

How could someone not like us? We're the best university in the country, we're smarter than everyone else, our students are better cuz our acceptance rate is the lowest, our grads are more successful and wealthier, our fans are classier, our football players are saints, we've won 53 straight Directors Cups, and on and on. While it all may be true, humility isn't necessarily a strong point.

While true enough (and roughly the reason many of our opponents have projected smugness upon the face of our coach), wishing for humility in football fans is roughly the equivalent of wishing the sky to be yellow and the sun blue.

Very surprised you do not see the "smug" attitude from Shaw. It is well known many see it... including Stanford fans (including myself). Stanford may be the "best university" in the country, if not the world... but the "elitist" attitude is real.

I don't think "smug" is the correct word to describe coach Shaw.

Shaw sometimes has what I would call a pleased or knowing smirk on his face when he is on the sidelines (occasionally in interviews). Some people interpret that facial expression as smugness. I disagree. Most often, people are reacting to their preconceived ideas about those from Stanford. I sometimes have friends mention those silver-spoon rich kids from Stanford when they know that I was a scholarship kid who was the first in my family to attend college. I guess they think that I am just the exception. While most of my Stanford friends had parents who went to college, they were pretty middle to upper-middle class kids. C'est la vie, if Stanford football wasn't winning, others might not think Shaw was smug.

I think the better word to describe coach Shaw is "confident." That is what really gets under the skin of opponents and their fans. It also rattles some Stanford fans when he puts on that face when we are losing. Fortunately, we haven't had to endure that situation very often under his leadership.

I find Stanford students to be no more elitist than other students. In fact, it may even true that Stanford students are more humble having realized that they are no longer the best students at Stanford and there's always someone better.

Unfortunately, I think some of the negative comments are racist. Replace “smug” with “uppity” and you get the same meaning but with the more clearly racist overtones.

Is smug used to describe any other coach?

I had the exact same thought. UW fans have made a meme of this. I know they just want to hate on Stanford but I think you're on to something here.

Yes, it is a fairly common tag for coaches one doesn't like, or merely one's opponent's coach.
Sometimes the synonym "arrogant" is used (including for Shaw).

I think "smug" is also generally applied to coaches by fans of teams that typically lose to said coach.
