Can't make this stuff up.
Cal Football's slogan this year is "Good to Great", which is the title of a legendary book on leadership written by Stanford alumnus Jim Collins.

Why should Cal not use a term because somebody else used it? It's not like it was chosen because it was created by someone affiliated with Stanford, nor is it trademarked. That's probably because you don't have to be on Stanford's payroll to string three words together and realize they might actually make for a good slogan.
As an aside, another book by Stanford guy Jerry Porras is Built to Last. That book actually inspired me to be an entrepreneur. If you think about it, would you rather be Good to Great? Or Built to Last? I'll choose Built to Last. Of course, Cal can't use THAT slogan, because it's not a credible one for the football program to use given its history and level of priority in the greater scheme of the UC Berkeley universe.

They're free to use it, but it seems an odd choice. It's an aging cliche and verges on plagiarism. Come up with something uniquely your own.

My impression is that basically all football marketing slogans or more or less aging clichés and verging on plagiarism … along with various other sins like being campy or insipid.
