Kevin Hogan update - TreesAndBirds - 08-25-2018

Not expected to make Redskins final 53  but A. Smith and McCoy ahead of him havent been great and Kevin was 7/9 and 2 TDs vs Broncos playing in Q4.

RE: Kevin Hogan update - fullmetal - 08-25-2018

Hogan always tends to clean up well in preseason games later in the game...but he faces stiffer defenses when he starts.  Having only two QBs on the roster might not be a great bet for Washington, but it's their roster.

I would assume Hogan could be placed on the practice squad? I don't know if that would make sense for him, but he may have few better options. For some reason I can't believe that Colt McCoy is a better QB than Hogan, but maybe I am just a bit biased. It would be crazy for the Redskins to have only two QBs on their entire roster, as the starter is a bit old and the backup has been fragile.

RE: Kevin Hogan update - fullmetal - 08-26-2018

I think Colt is the backup by virtue of his experience with the WAS offense.  This is Hogan's first year with WAS iirc.

Got cut today.

Devon Cajuste was cut, too, by the Browns.

Hogan claimed by Broncos

Glanced at the final cuts and recognized 9 Stanford players among them:

Alex Carter
Shittu
Griff
Daniel Marx
Hogan
Francis Owusu
Cajuste
Hewitt
Meeks

The one that stands out is Meeks, because he could have stuck around this year.  Bummed for him.  I suppose he'll stick on a practice squad.

RE: Kevin Hogan update - ColoradoTree - 09-04-2018

Meeks is on the Jacksonville practice squad, certainly not what he anticipated when he declared early.

Hewitt got picked up by the Colts and is on their 53-man roster, so he'll get to reunite with Andrew. That's a great TE room in Indianapolis (with new addition Eric Ebron to go with reliable Jack Doyle), so that should take some of the pressure off the WR group being relatively weak.

RE: Kevin Hogan update - Bruce Wang - 09-04-2018

Broncos cut Paxton Lynch for Hogan.

One Stanford QB looking out for another!  In all likelihood, Elway has been exposed to Hogan more than most GM's over the years...

RE: Kevin Hogan update - ColoradoTree - 09-04-2018

Once Denver seemed to decide that Chad Kelly had more upside as both a potential starter and a capable backup than Lynch, then it makes a lot of sense that they'd look for a cheaper, dependable-but-not-great option as QB3. That Lynch went unclaimed on waivers is a bit surprising for a guy that was a 1st round pick just a couple of years ago, but now that he's a free agent, teams can pay him league minimum as a backup and see if they can develop him. (Spoiler alert: they won't be able to develop him, because he is bad at playing quarterback.)

The upside of Hogan going to Denver is that Chad Kelly is unproven (he spent his whole rookie year last year on IR due to an ACL injury), so if Case Keenum goes down, it's possible Hogan might actually see some time. Even if he just gets spot snaps here and there, he'll further demonstrate his "solid NFL backup" capabilities, and continue to cash NFL checks. The downside of going to Denver is that he is by no means in their future plans. Keenum is their QB of the present, and they hope that he's the QB of at least the near future as well. Kelly is a guy that they'll develop as a potential starter. They will invest precious little time into developing Hogan when (1) Keenum is new to the offense and needs as many reps with the ones as possible and (2) any reps Keenum doesn't take with the ones will be given to Kelly so he can develop. But if Hogan can pick up the offense quickly and looks sharp in practice with the threes, then perhaps he could convince the coaching staff to keep him around, and perhaps be the one to spell Keenum instead of Kelly to burnish his resume.

Shittu picked up by the Cowboys. Hogan picked up by the Broncos.

Interesting context - hope Elway keeps his expectations reasonable with Hogan (now if he can manage to  Peyton Manning Andrew Luck...)
