KJ to Arcega-Whiteside -

It's now been seven games of Costello throwing to Arcega-Whiteside. I think AW is averaging roughly 6 catches-100 yards per game, which is incredible.
I am new to following Stanford football. When was the last time Stanford had a QB-Receiver combination as prolific as these two players?

Late 1990s: Elway-McCaffrey?! (albeit in Broncos uniforms...)

One candidate is Husak to Walters, 1999. I'd look up some of Luck's most common targets but the historical statistics seem to be down on the Stanford website. Luck spread it around, though, while the Husak to Walters connection was dominant in its day. He caught 76 passes that year, which was not his best year, actually. Most Stanford fans are convinced we would have won the Rose Bowl if Troy had not dislocated his wrist in practice four days before the game. He tried playing with a cast but could not stay in the game, and the most prolific offense in Stanford history (to that point in time) turned anemic without him.

OK, a real answer this time. Jim Plunkett and Randy Vataha (1970) rate an honorable mention among the greatest combos, according to this article:

Agree with Husak to Walters. Luck had three different top receivers his three years at Stanford and none had more than 60 receptions in a year.
2009 Ryan Whalen had 57 receptions for 926 yards (not all were from Luck since I am sure they connected in the Sun Bowl when Luck was injured)
2010 Doug Baldwin had 58 receptions for 857 yards
2011 Griff Whalen had 56 receptions for 749 yards

A post on one of the other boards notes that "Stanford has not had an all-conference wide receiver since DeRonnie Pitts in 2000, a streak that’s going to end this season thanks to JJ Arcega-Whiteside."

Thanks for the helpful replies regarding past Stanford QB-WR tandems. One point I remember reading back when Elway played for Stanford, was that Ken Margerum was the only receiver who did not complain much about Elway's high velocity passes.
It seems to me KJ and JJAW continue to have remarkable chemistry and I look forward watching it this season.
The NFL draft pundits , at this time, probably consider JJAW to be about a 4th round pick. But I don't see why his size, sensational catching skill, and intelligence won't be very attractive to at least a few NFl teams. If Stanford has a good record this season, and if JJAW puts up some impressive numbers, I don't see why he can't be a 1st round draft pick. Anybody here agree, disagree ?

Thanks for the great link to learn about collegiate QB_WR tandems. I especially liked reading about Fred Biletnikoff. I had not known he played for Florida State and had such a prolific college playing career.

Seems unlikely. First-round WRs are typically guys with ridiculous combine measurables, which I don't think JJAW will have. It's funny though, because that strategy seems to have a really poor hit rate lately.

Plunkett to Gene Washington in 1968 was pretty good, also.
