Not a single comment from anyone on this board about what Solomon Thomas has gone through, and his push for mental health awareness in memory of his sister who committed suicide earlier this year. Are gameday signs really that much more important to those here?!?

The story tells a lot about the man and his character. Proud he's one of ours. . .

I was going to comment, but your own post said it all: Heartbreaking.

It’s like Solomon expresses in the article - people don’t really know what to say, so they clam up. It’s good to see that he’s talking openly about it and very dedicated to helping young people with depression/anxiety.

Adding to the tragedy is the new information that Solomon’s sister Ella had been a victim of the worst imaginable kind of sexual violence, and that the incident occurred on a college campus (yet another...) Super sad.

i feel bad for him, her, and their whole family.

Tragic.  It is not generally known that suicide is the second-leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 25-34.  Unfortunately, the signals are not always obvious when an individual is in danger of taking his or her own life; and help frequently comes too late.  The case of Tyler Hilinski also comes to mind.  These are high-profile incidences because they affected people in the public eye; but there are many more that remain private tragedy.

Some suicide statistics that may be of interest:

Like I'm sure many of you, I have life experiences that give me insights into these situations, and yet I feel I know essentially nothing.

One thing that I am part of is volunteer search and rescue organizations. On multiple occasions this means "somebody went out to the woods with no intention of returning - go find that person. Oh, and by the way, the family of that person is standing right over there." So you go find what you can. Bring "closure" - whatever that means. There's nothing good about this.

And then there's situations where you know people who are either thinking about suicide, or even attempting, and perhaps successful. I am not Solomon Thomas, and have no intention of discussing things publicly. But there's nothing good here. We all have hurdles to overcome, some hurdles are higher than others.

I know we are not supposed to be political on this board, but it is absolutely not lost on me that the NRA's politics are antithetical to suicide prevention. There is not now and never will be a gun in any house where I live. And yes, that is a suicide reduction action. Sure, there are other ways of accomplishing the same outcome, given that somebody feels that today is the day. But a bunch of pills or a knife is so much less likely to succeed. So, let's encourage failure.

I'm glad he felt able to tell this story, and I think it helped that the writer to whom he told it--Stanford's own Molly Knight--is well-known to the program (she's done Stanford player profiles in the past, including one of Bryce Love earlier this year).

I can't imagine the pain that Solomon and his family have been going through, and my heart breaks for them, and for his sister for what she endured. May they all find peace, whether here or in the hereafter. May the wide distribution of this story help one person better identify warning signs in a loved one. May it help surviving families of suicide victims realize that sometimes you do everything you can to be there, and there's no stigma in your family, and you affirm your loved one as much as you can, and it's still not enough, and it's not your fault. And may we all be just a little bit kinder and more gracious to others, as we don't know the demons that each person around us is trying to battle--they need our support, not our judgment.

I hesitated posting this story before, but in this context, maybe it belongs here. Our own Ivan Maisel wrote about Tyler Hilinski.

EDIT: FWIW, the OP article was new, particularly the info about sexual assault, but the news of the suicide was posted on this board back in May. That may be why we didn't get much of a response to this post initially. As they say, tough topic to talk about.

This piece reveals some new details that are disturbing and tragic...I hope Solly is able to continue leveraging his position to continue advocating for mental health and wellness.
