> Stanf*rd bball c*ach Johnny Dawkins signs 2-yr contract extension, keeps him on Farm thru 2015-16.

Followup snipped, clumsily ->

@wilnerhotline Jon Wilner
But deal gives him cover for recruiting: Can tell rising juniors & seniors he's under contract on Farm for entirety of their college career.

@wilnerhotline Jon Wilner
Reaction to Dawkins extension: Mostly meaningless ... Either struggles continue and he's fired in 2 yrs or turnaround lets him jump ship.

Good ol' Wilner. Always the Stanford advocate.

I'm shocked that Bowlsby is foolish enough to sign on for 2 more years without having Johnny prove he's worth it. Anyone else surprised/irked?

You know what would settle this? Knowing what the buyout number is. I bet it's lower.

He's from Iowa, garvin - Redrum - 07-07-2011

Iowa understands football.  Can't name one great basketball player or basketball program from Iowa.* Maybe Dawkins convinced him the whole point of basketball is to maintain an equal number of wins and losses.

* Of course,  I can hardly remember anybody's name,  much less any basketball players.

Re: Wilner twits mbb coach Dawkins gonna stick around a while. - Kathy - 07-07-2011

Bowlsby seems to have a disconnect with extensions. He dinks around with Trent Johnson and Jim Harbaugh -- two successful Stanford coaches -- and loses the opportunity to seal the deal. So now he's anxious to extend the contract of a mediocre coach long before the current contract comes up for negotiation? Why? Dawkins has not given Bowlsby any reason to think his contract needs to be locked up for two more years.

Re: Wilner twits mbb coach Dawkins gonna stick around a while. - Leftcoast - 07-07-2011

If Bowlsby believes Dawkins deserves an extension than then our AD's expectations for the Basketball team and the fans' expectations are miles apart.

Stanford has squandered the capital built up during the M.ontgomery years.  To recruits coming up we're now at best a turn-around project and at worst a perennial Pac 12 cellar dweller.  Hoops is the department's prodigal son, once an heir apparent but after blowing its inheritance now content to live in the Pac 12 pig pens.

Bowlsby did NOT dink around w/ Harbaugh - Redrum - 07-07-2011

He struck first.  At a meeting with Bowlsby and Stanford Pres. Hennesy*  late last season,  they offered Harbaugh a raise package that would have made him one of the top 3 coaches in the Pac-12.  Performance bonuses were part of it.    Reports were that Harbaugh was caught completely off guard.

I think the continuing rumors about Harbaugh testing the college coaching market while Stanford's coach had at least some basis in fact.  I think his agent handled it off stage and IIRC,  it was successful in getting Harbaugh his first raise and extension.  But the message was that Jim always knew he was going to move as high as his ambition would take him.  ( Also, as it played out,  Stanford's best offer wasn't within cannon range of what the Niners were willing to pay.)

The way Harbaugh's departure played out,  it seemed clear that his ambition was always going to be measured in the NFL.  It also seemed clear after the second shoe dropped that Harbaugh had already made up his mind to leave and was going to leverage a magic Stanford season.  Our fate might have been sealed by the time the Niners fired Mike Singletary.  God bless Jim Harbaugh and all he did for Stanford football...but he was never ours,  he was always his own man headed to the biggest stage and biggest challenges he could find.

*  I have given up trying to spell the Stanford U. pres' name correctly.  Maybe I got it right, maybe I didn't.

Hennessy - two N's, two S's.  No pass for something easily referenced!    ;)

It looks like that image is not part of the message, just the board software trying to tag the message as a "very hot post", when for some reason there is no icon for that in the theme.  (This is a guess based on right-clicking on the ?, saying "view image in new tab", and looking at the URL.)

I'm confused by what you're referring to as the ghost image.

Well, darn, it disappeared, and haven't been able to recreate the phenom.

No doubt I messed up somehow.  If'nwhen haunted again I'll work harder for a screen capture, page source, or other documentation to share offline.

Here's the Daily Axe's take on Wilner's blog post:

Here's my favorite tweet regarding the contract extension:

Keating just got a two year extension... - Mick - 07-08-2011

...but SCU just won 24 games, most in 40 years.  Of course they were all against local high schools, but 24 is 24....and they return their top three scorers.

Re: Wilner twits mbb coach Dawkins gonna stick around a while. - yvonne - 07-08-2011

I'm pretty sure Bowlsby misread the contract and thought he was giving an extension to Tara Vanderveer.

That was a bug in the forum software. I don't fully understand why more people didn't see the unwanted images -- there actually was one in every post, but apparently some browsers did not show them. Anyway, as of today they should be gone for good, as Yvonne changed the setting that happened to be tickling the bug.
