Stanford-ND Depth Chart - Langdude - 09-24-2018

Surprised to get it today. I think it’s usually released on Tuesday?

https://gostanford.com/documents/2018/9/24/fb_depth_chart_notre_dame.pdf

Notable:
- Toohill and Hamilton starting.
- Antoine over Simmons at safety.

Wow this news exceeded my expectations. Some key returns at a key time.

Any word on if/when others might return?

Looks to me as if it says Hamilton OR Fanaika at LG.
And I would change the emphasis to Simmons back at safety.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player other than the first half of an “or” starting. The bigger news is that Hamilton is healthy enough to play, which was the intimation.

Yes, Simmons is back, which was also the intimation. But apparently Antoine is playing well enough to keep his starting spot.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - donkey687 - 09-24-2018

Edwards not listed. That is a bummer.

Toohill being listed may be a mistake. He apparently broke his arm last week and was supposed to be out for a few weeks. I know people play with broken arms now all wrapped up, but I would be surprised if he plays against ND.

Great to see Simmons back on the depth chart. He traveled to and dressed for Oregon but I don't think he played. It will likely take him awhile to get back in the fold, but we are thin at safety so he is a good addition especially with Edwards out.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - pcgoode - 09-24-2018

Simmons on special teams is money. Even if he doesn’t play much at safety, his tackling on punt and kickoff returns is worth the price of admission. Happy that he is back.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - Phogge - 09-24-2018

Simmons is also one of the best gunners in the country.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - ChicagoCard - 09-25-2018

Last week the early-week depth chart had mistakes. Gosh, too bad about Edwards although better info should be available today.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - CardinalSagehen - 09-25-2018

I caught a little of Shaw’s press conference.

Hamilton is probable.

It’s a “few weeks” for Edwards, not said very definitively, so it could be a while.  Shaw admitted that this hurt our communication in the defensive backfield, but it was good to get Antoine back at the same time.

Unless Shaw was being intentionally deceptive, Antoine is fine.  There was no mention of Noah Williams being in the game at the end due to an injury to Antoine, as some had speculated.

And Simmons is back, too. Shaw said he played on special teams and we’ll need him on defense this week.

There was no discussion of Toohill - which in Shaw’s world means “no change from what I told you last week.” Clearly, the depth chart has been wrong about Toohill for two weeks running.  But you never know - we might see him playing with a cast at some point.

Wedington and Sarrell remain out indefinitely.

I have a feeling both Wedington and Sarrell are going to be redshirt candidates.

What happened to Wedington? I never saw him be down on the field or limp off it.  Upper body injury?

No, he hurt his left leg in the first half of the SDSU game.  Nobody saw the injury itself, but we saw him on the sideline in the second half in street clothes. His leg was in a brace such that he could not bend his knee.

I guessed it was either a meniscus tear or an MCL sprain, based on the fact that these tend to require 4-8 weeks and an ACL tear would have been announced as season-ending.

He came off very gingerly after a punt return

Here's the presser with David Shaw...

https://stanford.rivals.com/news/sept-25-david-shaw-press-conference-q-a

One puzzling quote:

Quote:"That's part of it. The other part of it is getting five guys to play at a level which inspires us to let them play week after week. We still have some inconsistency up front. Yesterday we talked about individual accountability. It ain't just the new O-line coach. It ain't just the defenses we play. It's about taking the proper footwork, taking the proper targets, and then once you're blocking a guy he has to stay blocked.

Umm, if it's about taking the proper footwork, targets and sticking to the block... doesn't the new O-line coach have something to do with that?

1. Sounds like Shaw is very unhappy with the blocking in several areas.
2. I wouldn't take that as an endorsement of the new O-line coach.

Yeah, upon re-reading the quote, I think "ain't just the new O-line coach" is a pretty direct way of saying that the new O-line coach is part of the problem.  The question is whether the accent there is on "new" or "coach".  Could be that he thinks the problem is the adjustment from old to new coach, or it could be that he thinks the problem is the coach.

Either way, I take back my earlier statement.

RE: Stanford-ND Depth Chart - CompSci87 - 09-25-2018

I doubt Shaw is trying to say the new OL coach is screwing up. I think the idea is more to say that the players have to go out there and execute despite the challenges. Sure, there's a new OL coach and he's given them some new things to learn, and sure the defenses they've faced have had some wrinkles and have competed hard. But those can't be excuses not to play well.

Correct.  I watched it on Facebook earlier today.  In context, there was no clear attempt to make this about Carberry. That would not be Shaw’s style anyway. The mood of the day (particularly a few questions later) was more consistent with something like, “you media types might try to say that it’s the new OL coach, but you really don’t know anything.”

Rayburn left out a couple edgy, cantankerous moments from the transcript, too.  Shaw responded to one question with a short diatribe about how the “national conversation” surrounding the ND game and potential CFP implications is so far removed from his world, how there is no conversation for him or the team, how the end goal is nowhere near in sight yet, yada yada.  It was slightly entertaining.  I admire his clarity of focus and mission, even though I know it’s pretty standard coachspeak.

On a related note, Shaw seems particularly annoyed by Tom Fitzgerald at each press conference, and he doesn’t even try to hide it.
