I predict that a Stanford guard will be on that team at the end of the season instead of Destiny Slocum.

RE: WBB Yes it has started - 2006alum - 10-31-2018

7th seems about right to me for us. I'm not sure we'll start the season in any better shape than we started last season, but we have a much lighter schedule to ease in, fewer reported injuries (so far -- knock on wood HELLLLO woofing gods), and more upside potential than last year. I imagine a lot will depend on how well our 1 and 5 players settle in, as those will be our two significant voids with Sniezek injured and Johnson graduated.

RE: WBB Yes it has started - BobK - 10-31-2018

First of all McPhee a far bigger loss than the two you mention.

Last year in early October we couldn’t scrimmage with the injuries. This year only Marta out as of the other day.

I have t commented on the open practice and Tara’s talk as seemingly lack of interest but it was fun and informative.
:)

RE: WBB Yes it has started - BosCard - 10-31-2018

I'm interested in the open practice observations or Tara's talk if we have a second 3-pt shooter besides Kiana to help space the floor.  Last year team's would guard Kiana closely but then sag way off Marta and Brittany to take away the best parts of their offensive game (driving to the basket) and daring them to shoot the 3.  A second 3-pt threat on the floor would help our current players who are good slashers (Carrington and Smith).  It seems like we hear about Moshkau a bit as a shooter.  How has her game developed between freshman and sophomore year?  I'm also wondering if we have other potential 3-pt shooters (Wilson, one or both Hulls, Brown)?

RE: WBB Yes it has started - BobK - 10-31-2018

Wilson is healthy and made 8 threes in a game last year
Both in the scrimmage and drills Smith was awesome shooting threes
Brown looked good

But tomorrow we have our exhibition game so we will see and learn more

RE: WBB Yes it has started - 2006alum - 10-31-2018

To be clear - I definitely agree McPhee is our biggest shoes to fill. But we also have a lot of shooting guards to fill them. It's still not clear to me who will be our starting pure post - I think Smith is most effective as a 4 given her outside shooting and propensity to get into foul trouble inside the paint.

And as for the 1, eventually Brown, yes, but if Williams is playing the one and handling distribution, who's our starting 2? I guess Carrington? And then who's the 3? Jerome? Brown or one of the Hulls? It's clear in my mind that our ideal 2-3-4 is Williams-Carrington-Smith, but I still don't know who I think will best fill the 1 and 5 right now. And if we shift Williams to the 1, who's the the other shooting guard/wing starter? I guess we'll see tomorrow and as the season progresses.

RE: WBB Yes it has started - BosCard - 10-31-2018

Good to hear about Smith and Brown.  I am really rooting for Wilson since she's had to deal with so many injuries.  However I am not sure if she is the knock down 3pt shooter we need (would love to be proven wrong though).  Yes she went 7 for 8 from 3 against Ohio State last year.  But if you take away that game, she shot 13 for 61 or 21% for the rest of the season.

RE: WBB Yes it has started - 81alum - 10-31-2018

We shall get a lot of answers tomorrow.

From the various interviews and stories, Fingall is much improved and the coaches are raving about Dodson's new confidence.  Jerome is being touted as a 3-4.  So I think Jerome and Dodson will be taking on more minutes to go with Smith and Fingall.

Ki will no doubt get a lot of time at point guard but I would expect frosh Jenna Brown to also get a lot of time at the point--there will be a desire to get her as much experience as possible prior to Pac 12 so that she will have some confidence then if she is still needed at the point.  Marta is not expected back until Pac 12 time.  Kianna last year was a competent point guard and tended to have both fewer turnovers and fewer assists than Marta.  She doesn't seem like a natural at that position, so I really think we may see a lot of Jenna if she doesn't get into turnover trouble.

To me, what is most up-in-the-air are the 2-3 positions.  At the two, Anna Wilson is now healthy, DiJonai is a talent that must not be wasted, Ki should be playing the 2 if Brown takes on pg.

At the three we have the possibility of a "big" coming out like Smith or Jerome, or either of the Hulls who are certainly talented enough to get minutes, or a third guard (say we play 1 Brown 2 Williams 3 Carrington--not unreasonable.)  In other words, more than half the team could play here.

This is why I am so glad that Tara makes these decisions and not us!

Just curious as I live in SoCal and can only watch on TV — how many attended the open practice?  On TV it looks like the lower section of Maples is about half full for most games.
