WBB: Stanford 87 Vanguard 36 - 81alum - 11-01-2018

Overview:

A highly promising start against an overmatched team.  Smith and Williams are as good as ever, Fingall seems to have improved, especially on rebounding, both Hulls look ready to start, and Anna Wilson seemed to be back on track as a promising second point guard.  Jenna Brown practiced but did not play for some reason.

Flow of the Game:

Tara started Fingall, Smith, Lexie Hull, DiJonai Carrington, and Kiana Williams, and came back to the same group to start the second half.  The first players off the bench were Wilson for Williams at point, then Jerome for Carrington, Dodson for Smith, and Lacie for Lexie.

The first quarter our defense was suffocating the much shorter and slower Vanguard team, allowing only 4 points.  Our offense was good at times but not always clicking, and we scored 20.  In the second quarter it became clear that Kianna has the same terrific form that she showed at the end of last season--bombing treys, secure ball handling, excellent defense.  We were struggling just a bit under the basket, where we had a massive rebounding advantage but missed too many putbacks from underneath.  Fingall was showing great rebounding skill but none of the bigs were putting back the bunnies as easily as we would have liked to see.

The second half showed Tara experimenting with multiple lineups.  I was most surprised at the number of tallish lineups she used.  Quite often she would have just one true guard on the floor running point and have two bigs and two wings.  Lacey Hull and Estella Moschkau, for example, seemed to play the 2 part of the time, with Lexie or Alyssa at the 3 and Nadia, Dodson, Smith, and Coffee occupying the 4 and 5.  With this long, tall lineup we played quite a bit of 2-3 zone--shocking for a Tara team except it seemed to be very effective with our long, tall defenders.

The team also hustled on offense to get down the court fast, and while we had only 6 fast break points, there were many near breaks.  We also got back on defense quickly and were never really caught out of position on D.

By the end of the game every player but Sniezek, who is injured, and Brown, played.  Every one but Brewer scored.

Performances:

I won't try to analyze them all--I was watching the frosh and sophomores most carefully.  As I told a friend before the game, the development of Maya Dodson will determine how far we go this year--we have many other outstanding pieces in this chess set, and Maya has the talent to be an elite forward which would elevate the whole team.  She tantalized us tonight.  She scored 10 points, collected 6 rebounds and swatted 3 blocks in only 13 minutes, but she also racked up 4 personal fouls.  She seemed much more confident than last season but needs to show that same aggression and confidence against good teams while controlling her fouls.  It remains to be seen if she can--but if she accomplishes that then I feel this team can get back to the top of the Pac 12.

I had high hopes for the Hull twins, but frankly was shocked by what I saw--in a good way.  It has been a very long time since we have had frosh who could come in and play at a high level in their first year, let along their first game.  Lexie just filled up a stat line, with a team leading 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a team leading 5 assists!  Lacie got fewer minutes but also seemed to be a "glue" player.  I watched them carefully and their defense was excellent--they each provoked deflections, turnovers, and steals.

Also high on my pleasant surprise list was Anna Wilson, who was 3/3 shooting, including two treys but also a terrific move to the basket.  She had 1 assist to 1 turnover--I suspect that the way the Princeton is working that wings are getting more assists than the point, since the point turns the ball over so quickly to start the offense.  But after her prolonged shooting slump last year and all the injury issues, it was awfully nice to see her playing with confidence and having success.

Alyssa Jerome looked much stronger to me.  I believe in an interview over the summer I saw a coach talking about how her international play had made her stronger--and I would agree.  It is easier to see her battling more inside this year and being part of that inner rotation. She had a good stat line, going 3/6, snagging 7 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, and limiting it to 1 foul.  She may be getting more time than Dodson if the foul tendencies continue.

I don't really have concerns about the play tonight of any of our players--although acknowledging that we were playing a decidedly overmatched team.  Our free throw shooting was still not great--6/10.  Rebounding was ridiculous, we had 60 to their 34.  This was a major point of emphasis over the summer, and we will need to keep an eye on whether the rebounding stays so positive when we meet up with teams more our equals.  We shot 37% of our three pointers, which was a delight to behold, and 8 different players made at least 1.  Our point guards made 5/9 treys which will radically improve our offense and loosen opposing defenses compared with last year--if we sustain it.

Conclusion:

This was a fabulous start to what feels like it could be our best season in many years.   A lot will depend upon continuing these positive trends into games with more equal opposition.  I am still eager to see Jenna Brown play, since I hope that she can become a contributor this season--and her contribution, the startling play of the Hulls, and the development of Fingall, Dodson, and Jerome--could propel us past the likes of Oregon and deeper into the NCAAs.  That is, of course, the dream, and it is not an unreasonable one.

I don't see a chalk talk listed for tonight--not listed until Wed Nov 7.  Anyone have other info?

I thought I saw that this game originally was going to be on video. Am I completely off in that assumption?

Wow Lexie Hull.  May already be the third best player on the team.

No Jenna Brown yet? I hope she's doing okay.

She's suited up. Hopefully something minor keeping her out. She played a lot in the open practice scrimmage last week.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Vanguard - Lorcan - 11-01-2018

Interesting to note that we only scored more than 87 points once all season last year and that was in our final win against Florida Gulf Coast. I know this is Vanguard, but definitely a promising start from my perspective.

Very impressed by Nadia Fingall's stat line with 9 pts and 10 reb in 24 minutes. A great way for her to start. There's got to be a touch of concern for Maya Dodson with 4 fouls in 13 minutes of play. She's just going to have to work on that.

Nice to see Anna Wilson and Alyssa Jerome quietly have good games, along with the debut of the Hulls.

I'm looking forward to hearing reports from those who were at the game.

Hopefully nothing major as everyone else on the roster except Sniezek who we know is injured got minutes. In fact, everyone who played logged double digit minutes and scored except Brewer who played 7 and only attempted 1 shot, though she had 3 rebounds.

Hard to glean too much for the box score of an exhibition blowout, but nice to see Anna Wilson going 3/3 including 2/2 from long range and everyone contributing. We also finished on a high note scoring 21 points in the fourth and having our best shooting percentage quarter as well with the reserves playing.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Vanguard - 2006alum - 11-01-2018

Wow, sidearmstats are terrifically detailed. I hope we get this for every game. A few things jump out at me:
-Dodson and Fingall do indeed seem to have made brobdingnagian strides. Fingall looks like she's becoming a very natural 5, and Dodson was the most efficient player on the court.
-Our three point shooting was effective only on the right wing side - Lexie was the only player to make a trey from the left wing. Wonder why, and will be interesting to see if that pattern continues.
-Without seeing how Vanguard played, it's hard to infer too much about shot selection, but we had very few attempted jumpers, and 3 total made jump shots. If they played zone the entire game, that makes more sense, but that's something else I'll be watching because it was an area we struggled with a lot last season. If we have much better three point shooting, it matters less, but the more the variety, the more effective the Princeton can be.
-On one game's worth of data, the Hulls seem to complement each other. Lexie seems to be the better shooter and offensive rebounding, Lacie the better defender with more D boards and several steals.
-Fascinating that our leading assists were from Lexie and Jerome. It's less surprising with the pass-heavy Princeton offense, but it makes me think that in the absence of Marta, we'll be distributing by committee rather than primarily through a point. Maybe that changes when Brown is on the floor?

Exciting stuff, all around.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Vanguard - CompSci87 - 11-01-2018

Lexie did some nice things to get those assists -- she drew the defense in a variety of ways and made some slick passes to the open player. Very impressive. Lacie looks college ready too.

Maya still needs to improve on knowing where she is under the basket in a scrum and getting her putbacks and bunnies to go in. Most of her baskets came from finishing on the break, where she was facing the basket and had a clear view of it.

Did I see Stanford playing some zone? I suppose it needs to be in our bag of tricks.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Vanguard - jonnyss - 11-01-2018

i was there. lexie and lacie are both very very good. already!  they seem already to have mastered the offense and defense. and they are very fast up the court and very quick and agile in tight quarters. excellent court awareness leading to steals, rebounds, and assists (with no bone-head turnovers).

i agree with boscard that lexie seems already the 3rd best player on the team, after alanna and kiana. very few players have had this kind of debut: candice, nicole powell, maybe nneka.

the lineup with kiana, both hulls, maya and alanna is the fastest i have ever seen at stanford.

Write-up done at the top.

RE: WBB: Stanford 87 Vanguard 36 - BosCard - 11-01-2018

A good game by everyone.  But I was most impressed by the two Hulls.  There were some moments in the first half where our offense seemed stagnant and we reverted to passing the ball around the perimeter or trying to force something into Alanna.  In those moments the ball seems to move slowly and we got predictable and easy to defend.  What I liked about the Hulls was their ability to penetrate and make great things happen.  Lexie had some great drives and some even better passes that lead to easy layups.  And Lacie hit a pretty mid-range jumper and had some beautiful passes herself.  Both Hulls seem like great fits with how our new offense operates.  I know this was just one game against an overmatched opponent but I think both Hulls will see a lot of playing time this year.

RE: WBB: Stanford 87 Vanguard 36 - Jskass - 11-01-2018

Glad it was enjoyable. I remember being impressed with the Hulls this summer at the SF Pro- Am. Wait until Jenna Brown is out on the court too. The future is bright.

Agree with all and I was there. Except I saw several threes from the left side

Having seen the Hull’s play in person call me still surprised. They were outstanding. Their passing their D their coming up with loose balls.

Johnny they are running like the days of old. Loved it

Brown did warm up before the game and before the second half.
