Barry J Sanders - yvonne - 07-15-2011

The news article linked here isn't new. I read it a couple of weeks ago, but I hadn't seen the video before. This young man is very articulate!

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 07-15-2011

Here's a new article and video from July 14th: (Sanders Focused On Title Defense, Recruitment Process) by the local Oklahoma City news about Barry J Sanders' high school football team and his recruitment process. Here Sanders says these are the final four teams that he is evaluating and plans to take official visits from before deciding:

Oklahoma State
Florida State
Alabama
Stanford

and that his dad is playing a big part in the recruiting process and making the visits with him. It's terrific and exciting for Stanford to be in the race. I'm sure it's made a lot of coaches and fans take notice of us as a recruiting power. I hope he likes what he sees and experiences on his visit. As Yvonne says, he speaks very well. Sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders and values the total Stanford experience.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Leftcoast - 07-16-2011

Oklahoma State
Florida State
Alabama
Stanford

Hmmmhhhhh .... reminds me of the old Sesame Street song.  "One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong ....".

Re: Barry J Sanders - yvonne - 07-16-2011

Oklahoma State?

Correct! Oklahoma St. - Redrum - 07-16-2011

That's where Barry Sanders (Sr.) went to school...well, at least, carried a football.  None of the others is like that.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 07-16-2011

I wonder if there is any indication that his dad would advise him to value a Stanford experience/education? I have to think there is something there otherwise what got us into the top 4 over a lot oftradotion powers?

I know. Those extragalactic schools can be tough to recruit against.

The oftradotions are really no threat - Redrum - 07-16-2011

They don't have the team speed to  beat out the Crab Nebula  but even if they pulled off an intergalactic miracle,  the path to the playoffs runs through Ceti Alpha V  and there's not a oftradotion coach walking the sidelines today that could take on Khan.  You know that old coaching saying that applies to Khan "He'll take his players and beat your'n.  Then he'll take your players  and put them to slow painful death."

And even if the galaxy tips on end and enters some sort of time warp and the oftradotions beat Ceti Alpha V,  they'll still have to play Oregon.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Hank 91 - 07-23-2011

Here's another video interview of Barry Sanders, Jr., posted today. No commitment yet, but his list is still four: Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma State, and Stanford. He also indicates that there will be a fifth finalist added, and it seems like UCLA is the most likely #5.

Apparently Barry Jr. wants to repeat Sr.'s experience with the Lions, but with better weather.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 07-26-2011

Another article on Barry J Sanders: (Barry Sanders Jr. would be highly recruited, even without a big name)

It says he is looking to add a 5th school - and plans to take 5 official visits starting in September. Notre Dame, Oregon and UCLA are three of the schools that have a shot at landing the fifth spot.

Re: Barry J Sanders - fullmetal - 07-26-2011

Someone should remind Barry Jr. that you only get to attend one school in the end, no matter how many make it on to the final list.  If that last school you forgot to include on your final list was forgotten, maybe it should stay that way.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 07-27-2011

I actually think his process is quite rational and a heck of a lot better than most. Most kids rated as highly as Barry J have a lot more schools hanging around. Others make decisions without having a very good idea about the school.

He has made unofficial visits to a number of schools and looked into them in depth. He has thought carefully about his numerous options (I'm sure he could go just about anywhere in the country) and narrowed it down to 4 so far - which he has been able to do. That's so much better than most.

It says that he is allowed 5 official visits and so he is carefully considering which school to add to be the fifth. He plans on making official visits to each of them starting in September - when school and the football season has already started. It will give him a much better feel and understanding of each institution in that context - for the top 5 he has selected. Then - presumably - he'll make he decision.

That makes a lot of sense to me and if any kid asks - I'd recommend they do the same. This is a big decision and there isn't a need to rush to make it. That he can narrow the dozens of offers down to 4 or 5 with lots of thought and research is terrific. Now Stanford has to try to close - the official visit will be important - although I'm sure he already has developed much of his opinion so far.

He mentions that going to Oklahoma State - the presumed favorite because his dad went there - is influenced by whether or not he wants to spend the next 4 years in the same state that he has lived most of his life. My guess is probably not. So although OSU is on the short-list - it may be there because it's expected.

He sounds like smart, thoughtful, and mature. He has been injured and is recovering. Perhaps one of the thoughts in the back of his mind is what happens if he were to get injured? Having a Stanford degree would be great to fall back on if he needs to. Also at Stanford he would be expanding his network of connections for the future more than he would if he stayed in Oklahoma or if he stayed in a football focused environment. We have a lot to offer. I hope he's able to see and appreciate that.

Re: Barry J Sanders - fullmetal - 07-27-2011

That's fair.  I just remember my selection process (started with 7) and a very almost-arbitrary decision-making process near the end to get that 7 down to the best choice.  A few of those schools I don't think I would have gone to anyway given the other choices I had, but I do understand the security of choices and need for due diligence.

Barry, you'll never make a better decision than the one to come to Stanford.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 07-27-2011

Between my junior and senior year of high school I knew very little, especially about college. I knew Stanford had recently won two Rose Bowls (yes, it was that long ago) and was one of the hardest schools to get into. That's it.

The maturity and awareness of these kids amazes me.

The guy in the backfield with Barry Sanders at the Lions? Tommy Vardell!

Re: Barry J Sanders - StannyBoy - 08-02-2011

Kevin Reihner tweeted today he met Barry Sanders so I would assume he was visiting with his son, Barry J Sanders. Would be awesome to have him next year.

Great find young_money! I think you're right. I just looked up and found this tweet from Barry Sanders 8 hours ago so it sounds like they are definitely together and busy:
Quote:BarrySanders Barry Sanders
Busy day for me and BJ. But it looks like I will be giving away a signed OSU jersey today to one lucky random follower when i hit 21,000.

Re: Barry J Sanders - Griffins78 - 09-02-2011

New video interview and article on Barry J Sanders from the Oklahoman: (here) where Barry says he is currently planning to announce his college decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl which is scheduled on January 7th to allow him to focus on his senior football season and to give him time to take official visits and make his decision BUT he said he could announce earlier anytime before if he makes a "spontaneous" decision off of his emotions. Hope spontaneous means "gets accepted by Stanford."
