Will we be ranked? - donkey687 - 12-02-2018

The final committeee rankings come out today. I don't think we will be ranked but we should be by objective measures.  Boise and Northwestern should fall out of rankings.  Sagarin has us ranked 22.  ESPN FPI has us number 19. No one else in the 20-25 zone of rankings has as high quality losses as we have.  Northwestern and Kentucky are two overrated companies that most computers says should be behind us. Many computers also have Texas behind us, but that isn't happening.

It would be nice to be playing a bowl game with a number next to our name.

As David Shaw said, Stanford has been an enigma this season, kind of like Pat from SNL.  Good team deserving of Top 25 or mediocre team not?

Oregon was a game most people thought Stanford was outplayed in and was lucky to win.  Then they reinforced perceptions at Notre Dame when they were blown out in the second half.  Utah they lost by even more than Notre Dame, at home. So three games in a row, three pretty terrible performances. Then, it didn't really matter that they almost knocked off UW and WSU, they still lost to be 6-4 at one point. The Utah game Stanford was actually pretty good minus the uncharacteristic turnovers, but that score lost Stanford all benefit of doubt moving forward.  Hell, there were many people picking Cal yesterday, which I thought was crazy. I had predicted a 17 point Stanford win, and not for a meaningless TD drive with some lucky 4th down conversions, it would have been 17!

I saw Fresno and Boise last night, and am convinced Stanford is better than both of those teams. Northwestern is a question for me. I think they are better coached than Stanford, but Stanford has more talent.  Then you have to think about NC State who doesn't have any top 25 win, and the ACC only plays 8 conference games.

The reality is all these teams can beat each other on a given day, so the rankings are REALLY hard to get right.  I would probably put Stanford in the final CFP rankings, but can't get too worked up about it if they aren't.

Good points.  Actually, we dropped to 5-4 at one point (right after the UW game).  I have vented my frustration elsewhere about how the SEC dominates the Top 25 with a kind of circular validation process; and the presence of Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Missouri all in the Top 25 with the same 8-4 record as Stanford proves my point.  And I also think that Kentucky is way overrated.  Do we belong in the Top 25?  I am certainly biased and believe we do, but we will probably not be included because not enough teams on the fringes lost this weekend to make the CFP committee take a good, hard look at us.  We were 30th in the last AP poll, so we are clearly on a few radar charts.  Northwestern is now 8-5 and may drop out; Boise State at 10-3 may also vanish.  Iowa State, which squeaked by Drake yesterday, will probably remain at 8-4.  Utah at 9-4 will drop, but not drop out.  So that leaves potentially two slots for Stanford to occupy.  It isn't impossible, but (as you point out), we shouldn't be surprised if we enter the bowl season outside the Top 25.

The answer is no.

We didn't make the top 25 of the CFP ranking.

We would have been ranked #30 in the AP poll with 28 points.

We would have been ranked #32 in the Coaches poll with 9 points.

In each poll we received the fourth most points among Pac-12 teams. The only other Pac-12 team to get points outside of the top 25 was Oregon.

If we win our bowl game we'll be ranked.

Better to be ranked after the bowl game than just now. Should that be in the cards.

My only beef is Boise State being #25.  No way would they beat Stanford or NC State, who is 9-3 BTW. But I do think it is silly for neither Utah and especially Northwestern to have not fallen in the rankings at all.  It's almost like the selection committee only gives teams credit for winning conference championships and doesn't ding anyone for losing.
