Football and track - BostonCard - 12-21-2018

this tidbit from the Stanford football email digest should make Bob happy...

Quote:In addition to their demonstrated football talents, a number of our newest Cardinal are track & field champions—an excellent indicator of athletic ability. Wide receiver Colby Bowman is a CIF champion in the 200m and 4x100m relay. Offensive guard/tackle Branson Bragg is already a Texas state medalist in shot put (gold) and discuss (bronze). Cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly won the Nevada state championships in the long jump, 4x100m and 4x400m, placed second in the 200m and placed third in the 100m dash. Center/offensive guard Drake Nugent is a Colorado state champion in shot put and runner-up in discus. Running back Nathaniel Peat won four Missouri state championships last spring in the 100m, 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m. Cornerback/safety Nicolas Toomer has won Georgia state championships in the 400m, triple jump and 4x400m.

Always good to see track speed and explosiveness with football recruits. I remember when Don James at UW said he changed his recruiting emphasis to target players who were sprinters in HS. He didn't really care about what position they played or how highly rated they were. James wanted guys with speed, and then he would find the right position for them, usually on defense. It worked tremendously.

But on a personal note, I know that track speed doesn't always mean a guy will be football fast or a football player. I played with someone in HS who ran the fastest 100 in the state and who received a football scholarship to play for James at UW. He would beat me by 10 yards in a 100. On the basketball court I would blow by him as if he were glued to the wood. He never played a down at UW.

RE: Football and track - BobK - 12-21-2018

Colby Bowman 10.95, 21.47   The 200 time is very good

Branson Bragg. 53-10 and 190-4.  The Discus is very very good.  Remember weights are HS size

Kyu Kelly 10.72, 21.67, 23-6 1/2

Drake Nugent 55-9, 157-1

Nathaniel Peat 10.84, 22.36

Nicolas Toomer 49.65, 46-5 TJ

Many states have divisional state championships. So winning a state title may or may not mean over all athletes

So Bob, do you think any of them will play for the track team?

We have several possibilities now who are Frosh but none on the roster
I hope so but 2 sport athletes these days are rare

Hoping for Bragg, Kelly and Bowman

James Lofton ran the 200m in 20.5 and won the NCAA in the LJ with 26' 11.75" (wind aided).  Darrin Nelson still holds Stanford's frosh record LJ at 25' 7.5".  Nelson, Lofton, Gordy Banks and someone named Sheats hold the second fastest 400m relay in Stanford history at 39.84.  Banks has the second fastest 100 at 10.40, right behind Wopamo Osaisai's 10.39.

If you look at Stanford's track and field marks, they are littered with football players:

Incidentally, Lofton's 400m time was the exact same as Ben Eastman's in 1932.  Eastman was one of three Americans to hold the world record for the 400m and the 800m.

Alan Sheats was a fine quarter miler

Name the football guys in the top all time 100 list at Stanford
