2019 Stanford QB situation - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 01-01-2019

1) KJ Costello -currently a junior who in 2017 received a mid season opportunity to start and played very well for  6 or 7 games. For 2018 KJ did not seem to perform as well as he had the year prior, both in terms of throwing accuracy and mobility.
2) Jack Richardson, current junior from Palma High School, Salinas, not sure if he has played in a game for Stanford.
3) Jack West, currently a freshman who played a couple of downs in the UC Davis game and I think the Oregon State game as well.
4) Davis Mills, current sophomore has injury issues, played a few downs against UC Davis,  and I am not sure if he plans to continue his playing career.

Does Stanford have any incoming freshman QB's for the 2019 season ?

At the football banquet, Mills told me that he is recovering and plans to be back.

RE: 2019 Stanford QB situation - BobK - 01-01-2019

Mills should be healthy this spring per Shaw.
Richardson played several games including the one snap yesterday.
Costello came close to setting a record this year. Yes a great season, so great he is considering declaring for the draft.

No 2019 QB, one in 2020 who is on a mission.

Mills was supposedly healthy when we put him in against UC Davis. It took him, what, four or five plays to get re-injured. (I wish I could be more optimistic about him, but it's tough).
Didn't realize that Costello was considering the draft.
If he goes, maybe Phogge's 3-9 prediction isn't as silly as I thought it was.

I thought Costello improved significantly from ‘17. Much more accurate. Handled pressure well. He had to carry the offense. And did so.

Next progression- getting the ball out quicker. Part of that is schematic. Lots of downfield throws. They threw more slants and drags this year. But it still is not a quick passing attack.

If I’m Shaw, I’m looking at what Indy does. They incorporate tight ends and backs well. So it’s a framework Stanford can use. Luck is getting the ball out significantly faster than when he played under Pagano. It’s made a brobdingnagian difference.

Shaw has to get at least one 2020 QB. You can’t have a two year gap. As everyone knows I’m a very strong Shaw supporters, but he has not done well recruiting quarterbacks the last several years. His recruited some very good ones – Costello and Mills.. And I think West was pretty highly regarded. He simply hasn’t recruited enough of them.

Sorry to hear that he is considering leaving. Yes, he  had a pretty good year. He did improve his completion percentage significantly. However, he didn't show the ability to make all the throws that an NFL QB is expected to make. Part of that was that we didn't attempt those plays. To my eyes, he is not yet a "proven", "can't miss" prospect. The only way it makes sense for him to go to the NFL this year is that he expects next year to be more of the same or worse for him personally. If that is the case, Ouch! We do lose some good receivers, but supposedly we have good ones coming back that should offer the ability to fill out his resume (different skill sets).

RE: 2019 Stanford QB situation - Phogge - 01-01-2019

Costello is not ready but that means nothing anymore. Probably better for Stanford if he goes and if Mills is healthy and if elephants could fly.

So completely agree with all this. I saw way too many times this season when Costello threw WR screens that were tackled for no gain because the ball didn't get out fast enough. You don't have a second to spare on those plays. Costello would take a step back and turn then throw.  He needs to get the snap and throw all in one motion.

Costello also needs to lower his interception number.  He led the Pac-12 in that category this season.

I noticed freshman QB Dylan Plautz is on Stanford's current roster, and guess this was a redshirt season for him.

RE: 2019 Stanford QB situation - Phogge - 01-01-2019

If Plautz ever plays that is defined as the Nuclear Option.

I know it is fairly rare, but it is not unheard of for walk on QB's to play and do good jobs.

RE: 2019 Stanford QB situation - BobK - 01-01-2019

A walk on? Oh like Mayfield recently.

RE: 2019 Stanford QB situation - thunder_chik - 01-01-2019

If Costello were to declare, might we recuit/hope for a graduate transfer QB?

Well, a "live action" Dumbo is coming out in March, so you never know. Actually looks interesting for the little ones. . . .

I've got that idea, yes. That's why I asked him what he thought the offseason checklist for the team should be, and he answered like he's gonna be a part of it. (while inadvertently outing Kaden's future plans!)

So as of now, I think he's back. But that's speculation on my part

Losing Smith and JJAW is a pretty big deal.  There's an appreciable dropoff to the next guys.  Costello also obviously saw firsthand the level of OL performance this year, and his assessment of next year's OL could also have an impact on his decision.

I say this every year. Every team has turnover and college football rosters are cycled through pretty quickly. Inexperienced players become key contributors every season.

This is of course true, but there are some years where you can be more confident about the players filling the departers shoes than others.  For example, you can feel reasonably confident that, barring injury, Parkinson will be a big contributor at the tight end position.  I think the guys at receiver have a lot of potential, but it is still hard to replace someone as productive as JJ Arcega-Whiteside (the first Stanford receiver to get 1000 yards receiving since Troy Walters and Deronie Pitts, and only the ninth in Stanford's history).

Osiris St. Brown caught eight passes for 204 yards, a 25.5 yards per catch average.  Devon Cajuste owns the Stanford record of 22.93 in 2013.  I'm thinking maybe, just possibly, Mr. St. Brown could contribute.

To do so, in a manner that replaces the value of JJAW or Irwin, he'll need to catch an awful lot more than eight passes.
