MBB at UCLA, 8pm on ESPN - burger - 01-03-2019

UCLA's record (7-6) is similar to ours so far: they've lost to good teams and beaten mediocre to bad ones.  They did lose to MBB powerhouse Liberty at Pauley last Saturday, so they will probably be motivated.

We, on the other hand, will be short-handed with both Ryan and Davis out with ankle injuries.  Hopefully it's Bryce Wills' night to shine.

Don't sleep on defending pac-12 play of the week Josh Sharma.

Former Bruin coach Gene Bartow’s son is now the acting head coach. He was an assistant. At one time he like Haase was the Head Coach at UAB

The timing of Alford's firing reminds me a little bit of Stanford alum Deborah Gore Mann , when University of San Francisco Athletic Director,  in  December about 10 years ago, fired MBB coach Jesse Evans and replaced him with Eddie Sutton.

Thank you for the heads up about tonight's game, and I will watch it.

In other (bad) Pac-12 news, Bol Bol, Oregon's stud center, is out for the season.  A single NCAA bid for the conference is looking more likely every day.

RE: MBB at UCLA, 8pm on ESPN - BobK - 01-03-2019

Actually Bol Bol left school

Both of these are true. He broke his foot and is pulling a Nick Bosa.

Abeytia says that Davis is dressed and taking warm-up shots.  No official word on if he'll play. Ryan is dressed, too. A full strength team tonight, maybe???

While we're not playing particularly well, the telecast is much improved by turning off the sound.  I do not understand why ESPN pairs Pasch and Walton.  So far, this broadcast is more about a coaching search than a basketball game.

Geaux Cardinal!

I might need to try the no sound thing.   Stanford Hoops has been very hard to watch for several years.   I understand the team is a little better than some other seasons, but this team still looks like a bubble NIT team.

Pasch and Walton bring out the worst in each other. It's like a bickering old rambling dad and fed up son. It's so painful that it's distracting me from how much we've been struggling.

RE: MBB at UCLA, 8pm on ESPN - BostonCard - 01-03-2019

In case anyone is wondering, we are trailing at halftime, 38-32.  It would be nice if someone other than Okpala could hit a shot.

It would also be nice if Sharma's median performance didn't leave him with roughly equal numbers of fouls and points. I feel like I've seen a few nice shots from each of our starters, but not enough consistent production. Honestly, though, the color commentary is so distracting I feel like the game has been a handful of nice UCLA dunks, a few pretty Stanford plays, and a lot of utterly bizarre commentary.

Last week was a nice game from Sharma and illustrates why I'm frustrated with him and have given up on him. Last week showed that has the talent to be a force but rarely can he stay on the floor for more than 15 mins a game because he's a foul magnet.

If UCLA was at the level of Villanova or Duke, I would be thrilled with the performance.   However, knowing that UCLA has a million issues right now, this feels like a bad effort.

FWIW - Walton needs to go.   The whole broadcast he goes on and on about all kinds of things that have nothing to do with the game, the programs, or college basketball.   Sure, if you watch him once the stories might seem charming, but over multiple exposures it becomes very annoying.

I so miss being able to mute Walton and turn Murph on...instead of listening to Walton drone on about himself, we could have heard a great story about Dick Gould in the 70's, chuckled when Murph yelled out and brought a former Stanford athlete out of the stands for a brief chat at half, and enjoyed a reminiscence about some UCLA-Stanford football game that happened before I was born.

Another poor performance by us. UCLA on a 4th game losing streak, and we're  trailing them by double digits. I was hoping the team would show more in a very weak P12.

RE: MBB at UCLA, 8pm on ESPN - BostonCard - 01-03-2019

HEading to a 20 point loss to UCLA.  We were competitive for about 5 minutes.

This may be the game where my faith/patience in Haase begins to turn. Were there halftime adjustments? I didn't see any. Did we have any discernable strategy to handle them in the paint or keep them out of it? Not that I could tell. We made Ucla look like a top flight team by letting them walk all over us basically at will.

Seems like San Antonio was about a century ago.

These guys need a tough guy. A Ravelli or a Kirchofer. They are soft.
