WBB: Stanford 72 USC 64 - 81alum - 01-03-2019

Preview:

USC is 10-2, having lost to Texas A&M and UCLA, and having beaten a lot of mid majors.  Massey has them as 43rd in the country.  The three guards Minyon Moore, Mariya Moore, and Aliyah Mazyck all score from 12-15 points a game.  Mariya is the most prolific three point shooter at 38%.  USC is a guard oriented team this year.  Their two starting forwards each average only 20 minutes a game, and each shoots just a little over 40%.   Again, we wait to see whether Lexie and Marta and Anna return....

Overview:

Missy Barlowe refereed an overly physical game, in which collisions were often not called fouls, and it played right into USC's style of play.  SC took advantage of it to keep the game close, leading as late as 1:21 left in the third quarter.  The game turned in those last few seconds, with DiJonai getting a layup-and-one, Kiana sinking a trey, and Lacie getting a steal and layup with time expiring in the quarter.  Suddenly we were up 7 heading into the fourth quarter, and we did enough to keep that lead to the end.

Flow of the game:

Before the game we learned that Maya Dodson was out.  Not a season ending injury we were told but not much more.  Apparently the radio announcer said she had been wearing a boot, but she was helping the team warm up with nothing on her foot.  Lexie at long last was in uniform and had been practicing, but did not play.  Anna did play.  Marta is still out.

For the first half our offense was clearly out of sink.  We played with energy and speed and the players seemed amped up for the game, but they were almost frenetic, rushing shots and forcing passes.  Shooting percentage was way down at 33% in the first quarter.  The offense improved as we went along and we shot 50% in the fourth quarter.  Perhaps we wore down USC's defense.  Our defense, also improved some, giving up 19 in the 1st but holding them to 14 in the 2nd and in the 3rd.  It did seem as if USC got a lot of open driving lanes to the basket at first, and we tightened up some.  USC took 24 three point shots and made just 5 of them.

As I noted in the overview, we got the advantage only at the very end of the 3rd quarter, after being behind by a couple at halftime.  This game was very close the whole way.

My main concern is the health of Nadia Fingall.  She went down twice.  The first time I think she was clutching her right knee, but after a trip to the locker room she returned later.  The second time she was definitely clutching her left knee.  I could be mixed up.

Performances:

There are positive things to be said about all our starters.  Smith with 19 points and 11 rebounds got her second double double of the season.  With Dodson and Fingall out she played more at the 5 than we have seen for a while, and this helped her collect more rebounds.

Kiana Williams scored the most points with 22, had 4 assists but also, sadly, 7 turnovers.

Dijonai Carrington scored 14 despite going 0/4 from three point range.  Lacy Hull scored 13 points and also 8 rebounds.

One thing I noticed from the shot chart: we did not make a single mid range jumper--even though we attempted quite a few of them. All of our points came from in close or near the three point line.

As a team, we had a slight lead in all the rebounding categories.

Conclusion:

USC is a tough, winning, successful defensive team, and we beat them on our home count.  It will be harder when we travel to LA.  For now, we have one day to prepare for a UCLA team that just beat Cal on their home court!

We know now no Marta

The Moore sisters are very good. Minton averaging 7 assists also.

No post play to speak of for sure.

Maya Dodson?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - Jskass - 01-04-2019

My question too. They rely on her spark and athleticism and look flat.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - M T - 01-04-2019

Down 19-17 at the end of the 1st.  USC’s helter-skelter defense is messing withvus but I am not worried yet

Down 2 at the half 33-31.  Our offense isn’t effective. I wish we had Maya

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - mbdude - 01-04-2019

Kiana a little bit out of control. 4 to's . it would be nice to know why maya is unavailable

2 -12 on 3s

need some scorers

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - TheFarm07 - 01-04-2019

We are losing 33-31 at halftime.

I am disappointed in our shot selection this game.

In the first quarter, we were charging to the basket with 2 or even 3 defenders waiting, thinking that we could draw a foul when the refs were not calling them.

In the second quarter, we were attempting too many three's, as we are an ice cold 2/12 from long range.

Not having Maya hurts as we could use her athleticism inside

We have Anna Wilson back, but no Lexie yet.

In the second half, we need to make better decisions handling and shooting the ball. The Trojans were picking off passes too easily as well

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - qwerty49 - 01-04-2019

I thought I saw Anna Wilson in for a bit.  It would be nice if she's back to 100%.  She's just been crushed by injuries her whole career here.

Our outside shooting is a bit painful to watch at the moment.  Let's hope it gets better in the second half, or $C is going to hang an 'L" on us.

Alanna and Nadia are playing pretty tough.

The online stats are finally working

Fingall is being helped off the court. Doesn’t look good

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - TheFarm07 - 01-04-2019

With Dodson already out (and apparently in a boot according to the announcer) and Fingall injuring her knee, we are getting very thin for the post position.

Plus having Lexie and Marta out, more than a quarter of the team (and key players) is unavailable

Our depth will certainly be tested

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - M T - 01-04-2019

Unfortunately the game is going to be tight to the end. Shannon is going to have to get aggressive if we are to win IMO. She’s in for the duration

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - M T - 01-04-2019

Fingal is on the bench in uniform. She stepped on the court st the quarter. Leg was stiff but looked ok mostly

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - TheFarm07 - 01-04-2019

We lead after three quarters 54-47, punctuated by a Lacie Hull steal and layup to end the quarter.

We are still shooting under 40% overall and 25% from long-range, but Kiana has found a little range and is a robust 4/9 from 3-pt range. We've also kept the turnovers to a minimum as well.

Good signs on the injury front as Fingall has returned to the bench and the announcer mentioned Lexie was participating in practice, so hopefully her return is not too far off.

Fingall back on the court! You would think Tara would not risk aggravating an injury even in a tight game situation if Nadia was not okay

Though Nadia looks not at 100%

Nadia off the court again with a re-injury

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - TheFarm07 - 01-04-2019

We win 72-64 and hopefully the victory won't be too costly.

Our shooting wasn't great, but it was clutch when it counted late in the game and we were able to hold off the Trojans in the fourth, essentially trading basket for basket, which with a 7-pt lead, we could do. It would have been nice to have extended the lead and protected our other key players with so many injuries already.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - mbdude - 01-04-2019

Maya was on the court rebounding for others at start of second half. no boot

Good to hear,  especially if Nadia needs to sit out.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs USC 8pm Friday - triangle2 - 01-05-2019

From the post-game press conference, Tara said that Fingall hyperextended her leg, status unknown. She said Dodson's "foot's bothering her".

RE: WBB: Stanford 72 USC 64 - 81alum - 01-05-2019

My write up done at the top.

Fingall had a rough time.  In addition to going down twice, once with what we now know was a hyperextended knee, she also got hit in the face--I thought poked in the eye--with another non-called foul.  It was like a street fight out there.

I almost thought Missy had gotten better--the last couple of games I saw her ref she was unremarkable.  But last night restored my faith in our long held views about her--ever since she cost us the game in the infamous 2002 regional semifinals in Boise against Colorado.  If Nadia is seriously injured I will not soon forgive Missy for letting the tone of the game become so ugly.

RE: WBB: Stanford 72 USC 64 - BobK - 01-05-2019

There is no way men’s refs would allowed what when on last night. Several hits to the face no foul. Grabbing as a player crosses the key no foul. That terrible block on willians while in the air on a lay up a flagrant if me. And just and one last night. Terrible refs and I mean all three

Where is Romano and why did players have 22 and AAR in the back of their shoes. A family emergency?

It was hyped extension of fort right knee then left for Fingall. I didn’t see her post game

Smith played very hard. Gave her all

USC played without one of their top three players. Starts with M and I can never spell it :)

Cal takes ucla to OT before losing

Arizona leads the league
