Jaelan Phillips? Really? -

Former UCLA LB reportedly considering transferring to Stanford or U$C.
IIRC he was a 5-star who "retired" due to injuries last month.

We could use a good LB, but the injuries scare me. Grades?

Strange turn-around.
I wonder if he doesn't like the new coaches at UCLA or something and will the coaches at UCLA let him go to in-conference rivals Stanford or USC?

Grades most likely the limiting factor here, and I refuse to get excited unless this gets bigger than "a source close to the situation."
Don't care about the injury history, we need bodies. Ironically at OLB I think our pipeline is actually pretty strong (esp. if Toohill stays), so if by some miracle this does actually happen I'd use it as an opportunity to kick Curtis Robinson inside.

Waiting for Robinson is a bit like waiting for Godot.

Under the new rules, I don't believe coaches have a vote.
PAC 12 Scholarship Reform
"(iv) Liberalizing Transfer Rules within the Conference. The CEOs approved elimination of the financial aid penalty of the intra-conference transfer rule. Effective immediately, a student-athlete who transfers between Pac-12 institutions can receive an athletic scholarship from the second school without restriction, provided he or she is otherwise eligible to receive the aid."

Maybe it is my imagination, but it seems to me that we are seeing more and more highly touted players come in here and for one reason or another (usually injury) never live up to their high school press clippings.
Chryst, Robinson, and Mills seem to be there or on the way. I hope Sarell isn't the next.
Just bad luck, or what?
P.S. Phillips came down to Stanford and UCLA when he was being recruited, and chose UCLA reportedly because of his family ties there.
So I'm guessing his grades out of HS were good enough or we wouldn't have offered him.
As to what his grades have been at UCLA and how much that would factor in an admissions decision, who knows?

He had a 4.2 GPA in HS.

Oh for Pete's sake, do I have to do this again? Davis Mills was and is a far superior prospect to Keller Chryst. Mills was a 5 star. Chryst was a 4, for good reason.
As for Jaelan Phillips, I thought he "retired" due to injuries? If he has already had a bout with injury, he might covet a Stanford degree a bit more than he did when choosing UCLA. Due to NCAA hardship rules, if he did transfer to Stanford, he would probably be eligible to play this coming season, having used his redshirt in 2018.

Hey OF Craven was a five star who played like a one star. Ben Gardner was a two star who played like a four star. Until Mills can get healthy he is a no star and no knock personally.
As to the poster’s comment that Shaw is content with Mills and West then good luck David.
And ... remember that Aaron Corp and Ricky Town were not only five stars but the #1 QB’s in their class and did nada in college.

Well, Chryst was ranked the 4th top QB recruit in the nation in his class by 247 Sports. So although that isn't as high as Mills was, he still wasn't considered chopped liver.
Currently, Mills is a far superior prospect if he can get rid of his knee problems. A big if, IMO.

Mills had a stellar career in HS when he was sound. Maybe he’s the second coming of John Unitas. However every time he drops back I’ll be thinking, “Don’t let him be hit.” If the kid goes down after running out of bounds on a keeper while NOT being hit you have to wonder.
Hopefully he plays well and stays on the field so that in four years when he is in the NFL he can watch Butterfield pick up the Voldemort on TV and then watch him lead Cal in the Rose Bowl.

It’s the award whose name cannot be uttered. Hint, it starts with an H and doesn’t rhyme with Joe Theisman, at least until he changed the pronunciation of his last name.

Yeah, someone has decided that the word is taboo because Stanford has had so many bridesmaids and so few brides. So now we get the software switch.
