I still remember him scoring the tying TD against $C, holding the ball up as he crossed the goalline.

His senior year was Elway's frosh year.  He led the nation with 67% completions and was our 2nd straight QB to lead the nation in PER. The buzz in the stands was when we wanted to move the ball down the field, we put Elway in.  But when we needed a score, it was Turk.

OMG, it just keeps on coming. 62 is not old (Is it?)

Best wishes to his family and "Thank you, Turk."

This one really hurts, because now we are talking about a player roughly my own age that I watched as a student.  Mortality creeps up on us.  Whatever the cause, his death was much too soon.

Ivan Maisel!

RE: RIP Turk Schonert - 81alum - 01-18-2019

His most glorious day for Stanford, this time in the NYT:

https://www.nytimes.com/1979/10/14/archives/stanford-and-usc-in-tie-2121-schonert-completes-5-passes.html

And a retrospective look at that game:

https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/10/13/this-date-in-pac-12-football-uscs-21-21-loss-cals-gut-punch-loss-with-no-1-on-the-line/

It quote Ivan Maisel!

And here are some highlights of a win that Turk engineered against ASU.  Nice to see Kenny Margerum in there too. John Elway has a cameo appearance--throwing a bad interception. The game was exciting--I was there in the rain but only now found this on youtube. Schonert was an excellent quarterback, but was sandwiched between the Benjamin/Dils Walsh years and the rise of Elway, so sometime Stanford fans did not notice him sufficiently, in my opinion.

Watching John throw that interception reminds me that even the best players to ever play the game can make bad mistakes as freshmen :)

That was fun.  I was a freshman in '79.  I didn't  remember Dot playing as a true frosh.  He became my roommate when he played for the Raiders. The refs look hilarious.

We were "The Cardinals" then, according to Keith Jackson. I don't remember those unis at all....different number font and extra-wide white cuff on the jerseys. Also the larger, but thinner, block "S" on the helmets.
