Here's David Shaw on Andrew Luck and on the new toughness.

Things that stood out to me:
- Andrew runs a 4.5
- All the team's drills are competitive
Now THAT was a good listen - Redrum - 07-28-2011
Maybe a person who could have attended practices and then tracked who was playing on gameday would have made the connection. But from a distance, "competitive" says nothing about the inner workings of who plays and who doesn't.. Shaw spelled that out. All drills are competitive. There is a winner and a loser. Win enough and you will be put on the field Saturday. Starters who start but "lose" some of the drills will see their playing time, or for RBs, their carries, diminish.Â
Explains, perhaps, how a guy like Tyler Gaffney, could keep pursuing baseball and still get plays in games. (Not a knock on Gaffney, but this was a mystery of sorts to me). Now I know. Despite the dual sport split focus, in
practice he could still bring it. He won enough drills that he earned plays even though he wasn't even #2 or #3 on the RB chart. Take note Remound Wright and Kelsey Young.

"I mean quarterbacks aren't supposed to do that, are they?"Â ;D
(followed by effusive praise for USC.)
