Look Out the Window: Monarch Butterflies - newguy - 03-12-2019

I live in L.A.  Looking out my window a couple minutes ago, i couldn't help but notice dozens of Monarch butterflies streaming by.
I know this has nothing to do with Stanford, but it's nice to know that in the middle of this college prep scandal, one can stop and appreciate the sights that nature has to offer.

I live in Culver City and have seen them too. They are painted lady butterflies, not monarchs, though the coloring is very similar.

Painted lady migrations can be really impressive.  I've seen thousands or tens of thousands in a day before.

Monarch butterfly migration probably used to be equally impressive, but numbers now are a fraction of their historic levels.

One can still see monarch butterflies at Natural Bridges state park Monarch Grove.  Not many...perhaps 8,000 rather than the millions that used to show up.  But they're still there from mid-October to mid-January.
