Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - Hulk01 - 04-05-2019

On the season:

1.  UCLA hits a little more often , for a little more power.
Batting average:  UCLA .275, Stanford .266
ISO power:  UCLA .153, Stanford .145

2.  UCLA allows fewer hits, but more big ones, and walks more batters:
Batting average allowed:  UCLA .194, Stanford .224
ISO power allowed:  Stanford .064, UCLA .094
ISO on base allowed: Stanford .069, UCLA .084
ERAs:  Stanford 2.42, UCLA 2.61

3.  UCLA is tough to run on; Stanford is impossible.
Handley: two steals allowed, only four runners have bothered to try
McInerney (part time because he cannot hit);  eight allowed, nine attempts

4. The star tally is about even (D1 Baseball’s Top 150 honorees)
Stanford (5): Little, Miller, Daschbach, Stowers, Tawa

UCLA (4): Garcia (P), Toglia (1B), Strumpf (2B), Kriedler (IF);
The Bruins' Jeremy Ydens, also on the list is out with an injury.

5.  If Stowers, Tawa and Dasch are back, Stanford has a slight edge—and home field
Stanford has slightly outhit UCLA over the last month, is a player deep in its bullpen, and has an edge on defense thanks to Handley. And UCLA’s relative vulnerability to the big ball plays into a Stanford offense with five players who can go deep (Matthiesen, Wulff, Dasch, Stowers, and Tawa). But this is a terrific UCLA team.

It’s going to be great fun. I hope
Thanks for the neat analysis Hulk

Top 4, Stanford up 1-0 but UCLA with man in scoring position.

http://pac-12.com/live/stanford-university

Maintains the lead, 1-0 middle of 4th.
Brendan Beck dealing himself out of a tight spot .
Big Bad Wulff had a solo shot B1.

1-0 after 5 full. Pitchers' duel.
This game is on pace to be over in a little over 2 hours at this point.

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - JJJ - 04-05-2019

T6: UCLA gets first 2 men on base.
Beck induces a grounder to third and Bellafronto starts a much-needed DP by stepping on the bag and firing to Dasch who made a nice scoop.
Then a shot that looked like a sure gapper to RC and Stowers came flying over from CF to make a diving grab.
Our D is flashing some serious leather!

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - Treefence - 04-05-2019

B7: Stanford gets a lead-off double, then wastes an out to bunt a guy into more of a scoring position.  I know 3rd is closer than 2nd, but I'd rather save outs at that point.  The next guy strikes out, followed by a ground out, we wasted that opportunity.

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - BobK - 04-05-2019

Disagree. Thought the bunt was the right move.
We needed that run

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - JJJ - 04-05-2019

Of course bunting is a philosophical thing. I thought it was the right move. One wild pitch gives us a run.

Beck's night is over after 7.1 stellar innings. Now Little in for a 5-out save.

Would someone, if they have a second, post a link to either an audio or, better yet, video feed? The game is not on TV up here in the PNW.

Thanks, friends.

I agree we needed that run but you increase your odds by not giving away free outs.  Wild pitches aren't as common as hits, and most hits bring a guy home from second.

The game is on Pac 12 network, but for some reason it's not on their main screen.  Trying selecting sports > Baseball> select watch live on the right for Stanford/UCLA

Bases loaded for ucla one out and Little Ks two

Not in tv in the Bay Area

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - Treefence - 04-05-2019

B-8: Big time hit with runner at 1st and 2 outs goes down the first base line, and the right fielder doesn't make a good play on it so we get some insurance.  2-0 and still a runner at 2nd.

No worries. A lot of times, when you go to the top of gostanford.com and click on the game, it'll give you the preview, audio, and video if available.

Fly balls drops and game tied. A bit of miscommunication to say the least

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - JJJ - 04-05-2019

So much for "flashing leather"... Stowers and Robinson miscommunicated and a possible sac fly-throw-home DP becomes a long single and a tie ball game... Little gives way to Weiermiller

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - Treefence - 04-05-2019

We keep wasting outs with bunts and apparently failed bunt attempts...

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - JJJ - 04-05-2019

What a game! I'm exhausted...

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - BobK - 04-05-2019

Great win with a walk off hit by Will the Thrill

RE: Thoughts on the big baseball weekend - Papa John - 04-06-2019

Way to come back, Stanford! UCLA had all the momentum after Stanford gifted the Bruins two runs in the top of the night. That's the kind of game that Stanford lost in the past, when the team was unable to recover after a bad series of plays.

BTW, I listened to the 9th inning on KZSU on the TuneIn app on my phone.
