WBB: Whatever happened to Taylor Rooks? - 81alum - 04-06-2019

Something in another thread made me curious, so I followed up.  Rooks was the #18 player in 2014 and had a difficult time deciding between Stanford, Harvard, and Michigan.  She committed late to us and was the highest ranked player in that class for us, ranked ahead of Brittany McPhee and Kaylee Johnson.   Rooks was a wing, and it probably became clear that despite the rankings she would be behind McPhee, who was probably more more committed to basketball.  She certainly became so by later in her career.

Rooks is a 6'0" wing and solidly built, we thought she had the strength to go inside.  Her freshman year with us she played very sparingly--as in the fewest minutes of any player.  We only saw her in 12 games for a grand total of 28 minutes, and she seemed a little slow and lost.   Tess Picknell got twice as many minutes.  Something did not seem right.

According to this article, she wanted to do summer internships in finance, and Stanford expected her to be on campus.

(Not sure how that squares with Romano going to Peru and Chiney going to Nigeria over summers.)  The article makes it clear that she had no post-graduation basketball plans, and she wanted to focus on other things in her summers.  So she transferred to Harvard and sat a year out.

Last year was her senior year at Harvard and she did quite well for the Crimson.  Rooks started all 29 games Harvard played, averaged 30 minutes, and was the second leading scorer at 12.5 ppg, shooting 48%.

This year she did a grad transfer to Michigan since she had a year of eligibility, and she completed the triumvirate of playing for all three schools she was torn between in high school.  There she is studying for an MBA, and has a job offer extended for a year while she finishes at Michigan.  But something must have happened, she played in only 14 games and averaged 5 minutes and half a point.

Unless her plans have changed, she will probably soon be off to her job with Credit Suisse with an Econ degree from Harvard and and MBA from Michigan.

Vastly over rated but a great success as a person. Congrats to her
