Wulff singles to bring home the first run and we are up 1-0 in the first inning.

3-3 after 2 full innings and 1hr 5 mins. I don't think I set enough time on the DVR.
Also, both teams wearing their black jerseys. Not easy to distinguish on my phone.
An opposite field 2-run Dasch-bomb on a pitch down and away makes it 5-3!
Unbelievable.

7-3 heading into B8. And finally in front of a TV.

Is anyone else getting somewhat concerned about Beck's tendency to give up early runs? The offense has been steam-rolling, but it would be good for our Friday starter to be strong from the get go.

In the three games leading up to last night's, Beck had allowed four runs in nine innings.
That doesn't alarm me.
A pitcher faces the top of an opponents order in the first inning
and has to be perfect to avoid it in the third inning;
not easy being perfect through three for anyone, of course.
Beck allowed only five walks in his first 44 innings this season,
but has given up six in his last 21+.
Not as precise lately but he's giving us at least five innings each time.

My top "eleven":
1. Vanderbilt. But their pitching could kill them in Wichita.
2. Mississippi State. Good blend
4. Louisville
5. UCLA; hitting could hurt them.
6. Stanford; key is starting pitching.
7. Arkansas
9. Georgia
11. Oregon State; one great force and four starters who can't hit.

We were hitless through 4 innings, losing 0-1, when we erupted for 4 runs T5.
Matthiessen (starter) helped himself by collecting 2 RBI (they should've stuck with the heater he kept missing but they threw a breaking ball).
Brueser with an awesome diving catch in right B5, and we're quickly back up to bat T6.

A (S)towering 3-run HR T9 makes it 7-1!
That was “lost among the trees” they said, appropriately.
7 runs so far on 5 hits!
Little gives up a 3-run shot B9 and it’s 7-4 now. Little’s night is done after 40-ish pitches. Weiermiller in to get the job done with 1 out.
And that’s how it ends, 7-4, but not without excitement as the tying run was at the plate, the count was full, and Austin got the PH swinging. Way to take the series! Let’s do this again tomorrow!

Certainly an “exciting “ finish. Whew

We are down 3-0 T5 and haven’t had a baserunner yet. Let’s go bats!
Robinson leads off T6 with a single to break up the perfect game bid. Whew.

Beavers lost their fourth straight game (3-6 Gonzaga, 0-1, 2-5, 7-8 Oklahoma State.) Their ace reliever Mulholland came on early and gave up a three run home run to the first guy he faced, wiping out their 6-3 lead.
We could win out and still not ranking in the top 16 for RPI.
Once more: the poll voters are nuts.

Will the Thrill with a 2 run HR. USC leads 4-2

Esquer got ejected after he prevented Handley from that fate on a called strikeout that he disagreed with. Big Bad Wulff then singled and Will the Thrill left the yard so now 4-2 (should’ve been 4-3?) and we chase the starter, T7.

The Beavs are doing neither themselves nor the conference any favours by collapsing selectively against their non-conference opponents.
The Beavs are now 1-9 in their last 10 non-conference games.*
The Beavs are 14-1 in conference over the exact same time frame.
Until this weekend I would have said this was likely reflective of a shallow pitching staff, but now their weekend guys just went 0-3.
* One of those non-conference losses was a midweek game versus Oregon. So that might still be connected to lack of pitching depth, but doesn't kill the whole conference's RPI in the same way. If you prefer, they went 1-8 non-conference opponents and 14-2 against Pac 12 opponents over the same time frame.

I was at Dedeaux Field. The umpires certainly did not have a good game. USC's 2 runs in the 1st were abetted by several questionable calls. With USC on 2nd, Handley had the runner picked off after a strike out. The runner broke for 3rd and the ball reached the bag in plenty of time for the tag. Bellafronto caught the ball, put his glove down and the umpire called the runner safe. Esquer protested to no avail. After a walk, the USC runner on 3rd tried to steal home. Starting pitcher Miller recognized the situation when the runner was halfway to home. He whipped it to Handley who put the tag down in time as the runner slid. We waited one second, two seconds for the home plate ump to make a call. Finally, after the USC runner had separated himself from Handley's glove, the ball popped loose and the ump signaled safe.
Esquer got thrown out after Handley took a called 3rd strike on a ball just above the top of his shoes. Handley was understandably displeased. Before he could say anything that would get him in trouble, Esquer went out and escorted him back to the dugout. The ump had rabbit ears and made the mistake of reacting to something from the Stanford bench before the next batter got in the box. I heard Esquer say 3 times, "I'm not arguing balls and strikes." But the ump tossed him anyway.
Turns out the home plate umpire has a history of similar events when he was an MLB umpire -

Originally I thought Bellafronto had him, but the replay from the backside made it clear that Bellafronto didn't get his glove down and missed the tag. Besides, that call was not the home plate ump.

From the broadcast, it was impossible to tell when the ball popped out. It was quite clear that the ump was looking to see if Handley had the ball or not. Personally, I never saw the ball until it appeared loose quite some time after the initial play - as you noted.
One problem with the delayed call was that it gave time for the runner from first to go to third. The second was that it made Handley mad so he tried a futile throw to third, overthrew the ball so that it skipped into the outfield, and in comes run number 2. I am guessing his error was on the throw, but dropping the ball could have been another.

Stanford was sloppy today. Officially, they committed 2 errors. I thought the official scorer could have given Stanford 2 more. One on the dropped ball at the plate. The other on Wulff who bobbled a single in RF in the 6th that allowed a USC runner on 1st to reach 3rd. This was one batter after Kinamon misplayed a sharp grounder at 2nd.
We can expect to see this type of low scoring, every-play-counts game in the NCAAs. You have to scratch and claw for every run. 4 hits and weak defense will not get it done in the tournament.
