Quote:I would like to thank the entire Stanford community for embracing me over these past 4 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience and appreciate all the fans, alumni, instructors, mentors, teammates and coaches who have supported me on my journey. I want to send a special thank you to my coaches and teammates for pushing me on a daily basis to become a better person on and off the court. I will be forever grateful for all the support and friendships made. After a lot of thought and prayer, I have decided to grad transfer for my last year of eligibility. Thank you Stanford

Hooookay. I feel like I've gone from being a Haase booster, to a Haase enthusiast, to a Haase apologist, to, now, finally, a Haase skeptic. Three grad transfers in two years is not a great look - especially when both of last year's ended up starting for teams that went to the Big Dance and we stayed home entirely. Although I've long held the position that Haase should get four recruiting classes to prove himself, I'm beginning to think next year may need to be the "put up or hang it up" year for Haase, because he's hemorrhaging players at a rate I can't ever remember seeing at Stanford. I realize transfer disease has become a pandemic in college basketball, but it's sad to think that the best selling point for our players is to stay just long enough to get their diploma - the basketball is clearly not why they're staying.

While I've concluded Haase isn't going to ever be anything more than mediocre, and maybe not even as good as Dawkins, grad transfers happen everywhere.  Every guy thinks he's A) better than he is and wants to play more or B) wants to play for a bigger program for a chance to win more.

If these were in fact Sheffield's primary motivations, I'd say he was justified in feeling them. I've heard rumblings that there was tension between him and the coaching staff regarding practice effort and things of that nature but the bottom line is that we were a better team when he was on the court and he wasn't on the court nearly enough.

Agreed 100%.

I don't know what research has to say about the idea of a "streak shooter," but that's how I think of Sheffield. At times, a tremendous scorer. Other times...a liability.

Anyway, congrats to him on getting a degree and best of luck in the future.

In Cartwright's case, he certainly looked the part of a first-rate D1 player with Irvine, and it is hard to fault a player who is wanted by Kentucky.  If Sheffield enjoys the kind of success that Cartwright had it will lead to bigger questions.

Elon. Probably isn't the UC Irvine-level mid-major some were expecting, but he'll likely start - they lost their top 3 scorers from last season. Don't think we'll be seeing another Stanford grad transfer in the postseason unless they become good out of nowhere.
