Baldwin farewell - FarmBoy - 05-12-2019

It's worth reading his "letter to his younger self" posted on twitter.

Thanks for sharing - that was powerful and way more eloquent than a tweet storm has any business being. Seattle - and Stanford - got (and helped shape) a good one. Looking forward to what he does with the next 30 years of the decision.

He should teach his younger self how to thread a tweet storm. But good read and a very classy way to go out.  Does this mean he’s done for the NFL?

Also, when he “almost quit his junior year” was that his junior year at Stanford or in high school?  I knew he was in the Harbaugh doghouse, but I didn’t know he almost quit.

This suggests strongly to me that he’s done with the NFL, at least for now.  In my opinion, this reads like a farewell to his entire football career and not a farewell to his career in Seattle.

On the second question, it’s very likely to have been at Stanford that he considered quitting.  I spoke with a teammate in his position group who said that Baldwin and Harbaugh particularly couldn’t stand each other and that Baldwin felt like Harbaugh was out to get him. In addition, and perhaps more tellingly, Baldwin played only 7 games and had a total of 4 receptions in his junior year.  It seems like Baldwin felt like his Stanford career did not reveal his talents sufficiently to the NFL, and he was probably right about that.

And now comes this story from Doug about his Stanford experience, which is definitely worth a read.  This includes more detail on his difficult junior season at Stanford: https://gostanford.com/news/2019/5/13/football-why-vs-how.aspx

By the way, the same thing happened to Richard Sherman at the WR position. He got hurt and then as he started to come back, Chris Owusu beat him out on the depth chart. So he and Baldwin shared exactly the same kind of bad blood with Harbaugh. They thought he only cared about winning and didn’t have their back. The level of competitiveness at the time was probably insane. Shaw seems to place greater emphasis on continuity.

On another note, Baldwin is a fantastic writer in addition to being a pretty good receiver.

The story is that Sherman switched to DB because Harbaugh "didn't care about defense" (as in, he let Ron Lynn manage it) so Sherman thought that was his only avenue out of Harbaugh's doghouse.
