OT Giants MVP - Phogge - 05-19-2019

Pablo and it’s not close.

RE: OT Giants MVP - BobK - 05-20-2019

Without a doubt

RE: OT Giants MVP - Mick - 05-20-2019

Pablo's the best OPS guy on the team.  Belt is second best.  Pablo has as many home runs and doubles as Belt in slightly more than half the at bats.

Panik, for his third walk-off win of his career!

https://www.mlb.com/giants/news/joe-panik-hits-2-run-walk-off-single

Giants are still 21-26.  Strangest part to me is that their pitching is 19th in ERA, 16th in most runs given up, and even in their cavernous ballpark they've given up the eighth most home runs.  Giants are hitting a little bit better in May (.236) than overall (.220).  Sliver of hope there.

Between Pablo and Smith for who gets the All Star nod and isn’t it about time to change the rule that every team gets at least one All Star?

This might be the year that convinces MLB that not every team deserves an all-star...

But if the Giants must have an All-Star, it could be either Pablo or Smith.  Trevor Gott has the best WHIP (.686) and ERA (1.93) on the team, though Smith (.763 and 2.75) isn't far behind.  My money would be on Smith.

Smith last 12 outs have been Ks

Were there BBs or hits in-between?  Or 12 straight K's in 12 ABs?

What's the record for consecutive K's anyway?

RE: OT Giants MVP - Phogge - 05-24-2019

Tom Seaver with 10.

Thanks, Phogge!  I just looked it up and back in 2016 two BoSox pitchers fanned 11 Rays in a row.  The starter fanned the last 6 of his stint and then Heath Embree fanned all 5 guys he saw.  Evan Longoria was one of the 11.

Giants are still having a rough time in left field:

https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/05/24/san-francisco-giants-mac-williamson-tyler-austin-mlb-trade-rumors-left-field/

They just cut Mac Williamson (hitting .126, 18 strikeouts in 51 at bats in MLB) and are bringing up Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Carl Yastrzemski.

Yaz II is 28 years old, has never been on a major league roster.  At Sacto, his slash line is .316/.414/.676/1.090.

Frankly, I would have preferred to see Stanford's very own Austin Slater.   At Sacto, his slash line is .321/.591/./1.045.  At least he's done reasonably well at the MLB level.

Unfortunately they need than just a new LF.

The other night they got beat 18-2.  I checked while the game was in progress and Arizona's line score looked like a putt-putt golf scorecard, 1-2-2-3-3-3 on the first 6 holes.  AZ's first 4 batters were 14 for 24 with 4 HRs, 11 runs and 14 RBIs.  That's about two weeks' production from the Giants.

Agreed.  This will be a legendarily bad team, for quite a while, I think.  Especially after years of bad drafts and trading good young players.  The next half decade might resemble the 1983-1985 years.  They're on a pace to go 49-113 this year.  Their worst 162-game record to date was 1985's 62-100.  If they finish with 49 wins, it would tie the 2003 Detroit Tigers as the 10th worst team in history.

All their good players got old at the same time, and on the young side.  In 2016, the Giants finished with 87 wins.  Next season, 64.  Next season, 73.

This team is breathtakingly bad.  In the purest pitcher's park in baseball, they have the 21st best ERA and have given up the 22nd most runs.  Oddly, their WHIP is 13th best.  Maybe there's hope.  Their fielding percentage is 25th best.  Their hitting percentage is 29th, their OPS is 28th, their runs scored is 27th.  23rd in stolen bases.  25th in walks.

This team cannot pitch, hit, field or run.

On the minor league level, the AAA RiverCats are 11th of 16 PCL teams. The AA Richmond Flying Squirrels are 11th of 12 teams. The A league San Jose Giants are 5th of 8 teams.

Good luck, Farhan.

Just a quibble.  With today's loss they are 21-31, .403.  Over 162 games that projects to 65 wins, 97 losses.

100 losses is the classic milestone for ineptitude.  Projections are moving targets, of course, but they have a chance to project to more than 100 losses if they drop their next 4 games, but those games are against Miami and Baltimore, who are possibly the two worst teams in baseball.  And remarkably, there are two more teams, KC and Detroit, that still have a worse record than the Giants.

It's not even June, and already I'm wondering how badly they need to tank to get a really good draft pick. A couple of years ago they had the top pick in the bag and then Detroit went 6-24 after September 1, tied them, and won the coin flip IIRC.

And soon from olden days comes the June swoon.

Hoping for Bishop from Serra HS and ASU on the draft

Johnnie Lemaster time. Crawford should be playing slow pitch softball. He is done, roasted and toasted.

RE: OT Giants MVP - qwerty49 - 05-27-2019

Just saw the replay of Mike Yaz’s first MLB hit. He blooped a Texas Leaguer the other way over the SS head but then he took too big a turn rounding first and got thrown out trying to get back.

His 2nd hit was a soft inside-out liner, also to left. Didn’t see his 3rd hit but it may well be that being left-handed is the strongest resemblance he has to Grandpa. Let’s see if he can survive Farhan’s quick hook. He’s a 28-yr-old rookie, which says a lot.

RE: OT Giants MVP - OutsiderFan - 05-27-2019

I've actually marveled at how good the Giants have been.  Expected them to be even worse, but maybe the bottom is about to fall out as the players basically just accept their fate and don't believe in themselves anymore. By far the greatest disappointment for me this season is the Dereck Rodriguez regression.

Coming into this season I only cared about the farm system. Now, 2 months in, with every single affiliate team under .500, at least there is a draft in a week to bring in an influx of Farhan-drafted players for the first time.

It looks like Joey Bart and Sean Hjelle are re-build pieces from the the 2018 draft, and then there is still 19 year old Heliot Ramos, but the Giants need more than 1-2 legit prospects every draft cycle to turn their fortunes.

Now all I do is watch Bumgarner starts, hoping he performs well to boost his trade value because the most exciting thing the Giants do this year is going to be trading him, although I fully expect some of the bullpen to be dealt as well.
