MLB Draft - BobK - 05-30-2019

Starts on Monday.
Baseball America lists in order their top 200.
Stowers is at 103
Miller 106

No Stanford signees are listed.

So many on the Stanford team are eligible for the draft.

Very surprised to not see Little listed

RE: MLB Draft - StanfordMatt - 05-31-2019

I haven’t followed our recruiting too closely. Does this mean our incoming class isn’t rated that highly?

I also don’t follow the draft close enough to know where Little ranks relative to other draft eligible closers but I’m not super surprised in the sense that his performance this season hasn’t been what it was in 2018. I’m guessing he would’ve made the list if he was draft eligible last year. Selfishly, I would love to see him back for his senior year if he isn’t drafted where he thinks he should be.

RE: MLB Draft - OutsiderFan - 06-01-2019

Given how many years it takes to make it to MLB, unless you are a top 100 pick, maybe even top 50 pick in the MLB draft, going to college - especially Stanford - to get your degree makes a ton of sense.

This is how 2019 MLB draftees can be expected to be paid in terms of guaranteed money:

RE: MLB Draft - Phogge - 06-01-2019

Going to be interesting to see how Farhan drafts now that the starting staff have imploded. And how many years grace he gets before he’s fired.

RE: MLB Draft - Mr. Baseball - 06-01-2019

The incoming class is very good. Several will help immediately.

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 06-01-2019

Hey Mr Baseball. While I know who signed and who’s committed to Stanford including the HS freshman I don’t pay for the details

As Stanford Matt says disappointing that no signees are top 200. For so many years we had 3-4 top 100 and they almost all came to Stanford

I know we lost Diamond our top prospect and I should look to see where he’s ranked

So long winded way of asking who do you see helping Stanford right away as Frosh next season ?
Thanks

Apparently not everyone shares in your enthusiasm.

A rather meek report, yet it could also state a number of upperclassmen returning. If you have any specifics about certain players, please indulge.

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 06-01-2019

Hey botech. Long time

Remember these are signing rankings and for 2020 and beyond at this point commit rankings. After the draft signings this will change dramatically

The top 3 ranked teams each have 7 top100 players. How many of those 21 players will attend college ? 5 ?

I don't know how much information is really in that report since they don't seem to have any rating at all for around half of the recruits to the major programs.

That list has three Stanford guys that they give their top score of 10: Brock Jones OF/1B/LHP, Cole Hinkelman OF, and Henry Gargus OF/1B/LHP.
That's more than any other Pac 12 program that I saw except UCLA with 4.
Stanford also has Owen Cobb SS/2B with a 9.5.

However, Stanford's class is small compared to the others (ever heard that before) and they have 5 guys they don't have a grade, one of whom is listed twice. That brings down Stanford's overall grade and average player score.

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 06-01-2019

More. I have heard Crampton is their top incoming Frosh. He has no grade

Brock Jones will walk on for Football

Toomer is a football signee

I wonder if Bellafronto is coming back.  He's a redshirt junior this year, so I assume he's on track to graduate.  He was the best Stanford player at the plate yesterday with an HR and a walk in four plate appearances.  He's currently #4 in OPS and slugging percentage among the nine players with substantial at bats.  Still, his BA is just .276 and he has the third highest strikeout ratio, so he's unlikely to be drafted high if he's drafted at all.

Think he'll return?

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 06-02-2019

He and Duke in the same situation. Hope so Mick

However when was the last time we had a 5th year player ?
Can't recall one

While Kinamon and Bellafronto are in the same situation eligibility-wise, they may not be in the same situation for the draft.

Kinamon came to Stanford as a top recruit (Perfect Game all-american), though as far as I know he wasn't drafted.
He started 26 games as a frosh, played full time as a soph and was all-Pac 12. And was drafted (34th round) last year despite being injured.
He has had a good, not great, season with better power numbers.

Bellafronto, on the other hand, was not a big prospect out of high school, basically did not see the field until this year, and didn't secure a starting spot until some ways into the season. So, it seems at least possible that he is not very high on MLB radar along with the possibility that a full year as starter could get him there. Thus I see at least a reason he might want to play at Stanford next year.

It would be rare. I don't recall a fifth year baseball player either - to look I'd go back through a list of guys who had significant injuries.

RE: MLB Draft - StanfordMatt - 06-03-2019

Bellafronto’s situation reminds me of Beau Branton from last year. Both players rode the bench most of their first three years but broke out with brobdingnagian senior seasons. While they both had productive senior years, it’s always hard to tell how they’re viewed by scouts - does their production project to the next level? I don’t recall whether Branton was drafted last summer (if he was, it was in the later rounds) but I’m pretty sure he went straight to work for Disney as it was mentioned during several televised games that this was his plan. I have not heard anything specifically about Bellafronto’s plans. When they discuss him during telecasts it’s usually to point out that he considered transferring after not playing much early but decided to stick it out at Stanford instead.

RE: MLB Draft - JJJ - 06-03-2019

Beau did play pro after being drafted by seattle and before going to Disney.

An observation that I have seen from several scouts/observers:

Quote:"This is the worst group of college arms I've seen in the first round in my 30 years of scouting," a NL front-office executive said. "It's so weak."

Love the Bishop pick! Now let’s hope he isn’t another in a seemingly endless history of Giants college drafted OF busts, like...

Steve Hosey, Calvin Murray, Gary Brown to name a few.

Bishop looks like an athlete similar to Joc Pederson, also from Palo Alto. Big, powerful and fast. Haven’t seen anyone fit that description in a Giants uni since....?

Was Dave Kingman from ASU or $C?

He grew up in Illinois, went to USC.  A few interesting facts about Kong:

Hit the most home runs in his final season (35) of any major league player.
Has more career home runs than Frank Howard, Jim Rice, Duke Snider, Dale Murphy, Mike Piazza, Al Kaline, Tony Perez, Ralph Kiner, and Billy Williams.
Has 16 career grand slams, same as Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth.
