OT Come on Farhan! - Phogge - 06-01-2019

The draft pick penalty expires Monday at 12:01. At that point Dallas Kuechel can be signed without losing any picks. The Giants are not mentioned as contenders. He would be perfect at China Basin but the Giants have gone cheap. I may just go back to my childhood and root for the Dodgers.

There are so many horrible things wrong with that post.

First of all, if Kuechel can make the Giants win more games (finish with a better record than without him, keep him as far away from Oracle Park as possible. Don't want to risk putting the Top 5 pick in jeopardy. It's bad enough that Sabean made the team good enough to only get the #10 pick on Monday. The Giants are in re-build mode for at least 2-3 more years. No way a guy like that would ever consider a team like that anyway.

Second, NOBODY can call themselves a Giants fan - or be allowed the right - if they EVER root for the Dodgers.  E-V-E-R!!

Horseschit. I grew up a Dodger fan. My supreme loyalty anyway is to the Seals.

There are no horses in the farm system. Kuechel will take the place on Bum and all you need to do is pay him.

Older gentleman wearing a Dodgers baseball cap walks into the St. Helena branch of Bank of America.  The assistant manager says jokingly "Hey, this is Giants country, you can't wear that in here."  Old man replies, "I think I've earned the right to wear it anywhere I please."  Turns out it was Duke Snider, who was a Dodger for the first 15 years of his career, then a Met for one year (made the All Star team!) and his last season in 1964 was playing for your San Francisco Giants.

He retired to Fallbrook in SoCal (Duke was born in Escondido and went to Compton High).  There was a Duke Snider fan club there, and they did fundraisers every year.  It was run by a guy named Bob Lucy.  Duke taught Bob's son Donny Lucy how to swing a bat.  Donny Lucy played for Stanford from 2002 through 2004.

Trivia: Who were the Giants last two #10 picks in the first round? Hint: they were selected in back to back years. Both made four all-star teams each.

Before the MLB Network I shot 27 World Series for the companies which produced TWIB and many other programs. We shot hundreds of black background historical interviews with former players, managers and front office types. Bobby Thompson was friendly and sharp in the retelling of his saga. When we struck the lights and grip equipment and shut down the camera he asked us if we wanted the real story. We sat and listened to a story of how he and Branca have made a lucrative career out of personal appearances together. His last statement went something like this, “That SOB has made a living out of one fat pitch. I hit the GD homerun.”

In the wake of his illness, Lou Gehrig was the first player to have his number retired. The first five players to have their numbers retired were New York players; Lou, the Babe and DiMaggio were #1, #3, and #6; and King Carl Hubbell and Mel Ott were #2 and #4 respectively. Honus Wagner was #5.

Christy played in the pre-number era.

The #7 player was the never-heralded Billy Meyer, who had the distinction of playing mostly in the minor leagues, but when he was in the majors played for one of the worst teams ever, the 1916 A's who won 36 games and lost 117; then years later he would manage the Pirates to a 42-112 record in 1952.  Still, he was so beloved in Pittsburgh, they retired his number (1), the seventh number of all time so retired..

Well, I was just talking about "actual" numbers rather than "non-numbers," and Hornsby wore 9, 11, 16, but if you insist on going that route, we should add:

McDougald, Commerce. Bobby Brown, Galileo. Jerry Coleman, Lowell. Charlie Silvera, SI. Andy Carey, Alameda. Billy Martin, Berkeley. All those Yanks played at least one year together and when they rounded third were waived home by Frankie Crosetti, Mission. Also the Yanks signed Gus Triandos out of Mission but traded him to the Browns and had Jackie Jensen for a season before trading him to Washington.

When we graduated San Francisco ran out of players. LOL.
