Trivia - Andy Messersmith - lex24 - 07-24-2019

Phogge’s ability to bunt led me to take a look at Messersmith ‘s career. 2.861 career ERA. Sixth lowest among starting pitchers in the Post dead ball era, beginning in 1920.

Who are the 5 ahead of him?

I knew Messersmith was good. I didn’t know he was THAT good.

Koufax, Spahn, Marichal, Newhouser and Kershaw. But there were guys who straddled the era like Walter Johnson so I guess you mean guys who broke in after 1920. However if I HAD to win a game and do it with guys I saw pitch I would take Allie Reynolds.

BTW, I singled off Andy in another at bat but lost 6-5 in ten innings.

Koufax
Gibson
Kershaw
Ford
Clemons

Must win game? Ford or Gibson

Kershaw Koufax and Ford are correct. 2 more. Both surprised me. One pitched forever. The other was part os a famous AL starting staff

RE: Trivia - Andy Messersmith - Phogge - 07-25-2019

Palmer?

The guy who pitched forever could be Wilhelm but he was a reliever for most of his career. Fascinating new book, “History of baseball in ten pitches” has a good section on Hoyt and the knuckler.

Palmer or the Stanford connection McNally.

Yes I’ll go with Hoyt.

Wilhelm and Palmer it is. And I agree Phogge, primarily a reliever. I blame Wikipedia.

RE: Trivia - Andy Messersmith - BobK - 07-26-2019

Hoyt started just 52 games. I guess far more late in his career

Hoyt holds two major league records what are they ?

RE: Trivia - Andy Messersmith - Phogge - 07-26-2019

Most games for a pitcher? Homered in first at bat and never again?

RE: Trivia - Andy Messersmith - BobK - 07-26-2019

Hoyt homered in his first at bat then the most ABs never homered again. About 430 ABs

Hoyt won more games in relief than any other pitcher in history and still holds record
